Man United’s rejected offer for Mason Mount show why Liverpool withdrew
Share
Liverpool are no longer chasing Chelsea midfielder Mason Mount, and the offers Manchester United have rejected so far show why he retired.
Earlier this summer, it looked likely that Mount Stamford would swap Bridge for Anfield as part of Jurgen Klopp’s midfield rebuild.
With the 24-year-old in the final year of his contract and Chelsea reluctant to offer him the extension he sought, Liverpool were ready to follow up on their long-standing interest.
Also at the end of May, he was presented as Mount’s most realistic option, until terms could be agreed with Man United.
As with Jude Bellingham, the Reds were quickly taken out of the picture as those within the club felt a deal was too costly to justify. However, United continued their efforts to sign the Englishman and this week Chelsea’s second offer was rejected.
According to widespread reports on Wednesday, including from Sky Sports, Chelsea have turned down a new offer worth up to £50m.
That package was a guaranteed £45m package with £5m in add-ons which, like United’s earlier offer of £40m, was “rejected immediately”.
The Athletic report says Chelsea United have presented terms which they have deemed acceptable, with the London club asking for £60m upfront and £5m in add-ons.
Despite this, it is claimed a deal is ‘closer’, although Sky Sports added that United ‘have their eyes set on a valuation they are unlikely to go beyond’.
When Liverpool waived Bellingham, they clearly decided to spread their funds across multiple midfielders which has paid off so far.
A deal for Alexis Mac Allister was valued at just £35million, with no further payments to be made at Brighton, according to This Is Anfield reports. Meanwhile, the latest reports from Nice suggest French midfielder Khephren Thuram – likely to sign up next – will be available for a similar fee.
Borussia Monchengladbach’s Manu Kone is priced in the same region, with Liverpool expected to bring in two more to join Mac Allister.
While Mount would be a great signing and help solve the local problem developing on Klopp’s side, he would also come with higher salary demands.
With Chelsea having already rejected a £50m offer and instead seeking £65m, that, plus Mount’s likely earnings of £200,000 a week, could see a deal worth at least £117m in five years.

Liverpool goalkeeper has no idea of his future at club – “If the coach likes me…”
Vitezslav Jaros has been relegated to an unlikely No.1 spot this summer but the Liverpool goalkeeper is fumbling in the dark over his future at Anfield.
After the injury of regular player Matej Kovar, Jaros has the opportunity to start for the Czech Republic in the European U21 Championship.
England (June 22), Germany (June 25) and Israel (June 28) are their group stage opponents, in which the 21-year-old will make his first competitive appearances since October.
He spent last season on loan at Stockport but was sidelined by injury for two months before falling out of favor on his return.
Jaros turns 22 in July and returns to Liverpool as a local player in the Premier League. Speculation about Caoimhin Kelleher’s future continues. But speaking to iSport in his Czech homeland, he hinted he was unsure of the plans for him after pre-season.
“I should go to training. It will be very important there. If the coach likes you, he can say he will try you,” Jaros said.
“My loan at Stockport is over, I’m back at Liverpool. We’ll see what I can find.
“I don’t know if the club wants me to stay or go somewhere else. When the opportunity arises, you have to take it.”
Jaros has been a substitute for three Champions League games in 2020/21 but has spent much of the last two and a half years on loan at St Patrick’s Athletic, Notts County and then Stockport.
It would be a big step for him to be back in the first team now, although it’s not out of the question given how many players are needed first and foremost in training.
If he were to go, Jaros expressed a desire to stay in England but admitted he was “open to anything” that was presented to him. “I got used to life and football there,” he explained.
“If there’s a good offer, I’d like to stay. But I’m not against change either. I’m open to anything.”
Jaros joined Liverpool from Slavia Prague in 2017 and is in a difficult position this summer.
