Despite reports claiming that Romeo Lavia must leave in order for Liverpool to pursue a third midfield signing, it appears that the Reds are still hopeful of bringing him in this summer.

This information is provided by a tweet from Florian Plettenberg of Sky Germany, who claims that although negotiations between the Merseysiders and the Belgian “are concrete and ongoing,” a deal has not yet been reached.

Given that the player is only 19 years old and there is no assurance of a near-immediate fit, the signing could prove to be a barrier too far for the club at £50m.

Having played a full season in the Premier League, it’s important to note that Lavia is not your typical young player.

We hardly have time to wait another year, given the well-known agreement Southampton currently has with Manchester City (a buyback clause worth £40 million that the Sky Blues can activate next summer).

There will be more urgent needs for the recruitment team to meet elsewhere in the squad next summer, leaving aside the obvious need to complete the work started by bringing Dominik Szoboszlai and Alexis Mac Allister to the squad.

Although we can appreciate the club’s decision to pay a high price for the teenager, it would be completely illogical to balk at the price in order to save £10 million next summer – assuming the player doesn’t find a move to the Etihad more enticing by then.

According to The Athletic, Thiago is courting interest from the Saudi Pro League and has already turned down an offer from a local club. But a departure from Liverpool cannot be completely ruled out because the Spaniard’s contract expires next summer.

Lavia, meanwhile, has emerged as Liverpool’s top choice for the position as the Reds consider their options in the market following the arrival of Szoboszlai earlier this week.

Lavia would be a good long-term option for the Reds, and while he wouldn’t be a direct substitute for Thiago, it would be a case of swapping one out and bringing one in. Real Madrid, though, is the destination that Mbappé is most likely to choose. This has been the situation for a while, as Liverpool is well aware of his talent and prowess—but also his price tag.

Even though it would be less than Neymar’s transfer from Barcelona to PSG, it is simply not going to happen. Even without the transfer fee, Mbappé would be extremely expensive, and Liverpool will never approve of it.
