According to Graeme Souness, Liverpool still lacks a particular kind of player.

This summer, Liverpool underwent a significant renovation in the heart of the Anfield defence, and Jurgen Klopp added four new midfielders to the squad.

Along with Fabinho, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, and Naby Keita, veteran players including captain Jordan Henderson and vice-captain James Milner also left the team.

It was clear that signings were needed in the middle of the park, but despite the impressive deals made by the Reds, Liverpool legend Graeme Souness believes Klopp’s side are still lacking a certain type of player.

“The time to strengthen is when you’re at the top and you’re bringing in players who don’t need to make an impact straight away,” Souness told the Mirror (via Liverpool Echo).
“Last summer I wrote an article saying Liverpool needed to strengthen in midfield and they didn’t do it. A few weeks later they went and signed Arthur Melo and he never played once for Liverpool.

“If you looked at the age, it wasn’t rocket science [it would end badly].
They were at an age where you would have to keep a very close eye on him.
Now they have done it and I think Mac Allister and Szoboszlai will become stars for Liverpool, but I would still like them to have a top-class midfielder.”

Dominik Szoboszlai and Alexis Mac Allister started in the red shirt following their respective transfers from RB Leipzig and Brighton.

Meanwhile, Wataru Endo is still settling into the team following his move from Stuttgart at the end of the summer.

Deadline signing Ryan Gravenberch has yet to feature for the club since leaving Bayern Munich, but rather than join the Netherlands U21 team, the former Ajax man has opted to stay to Merseyside to get used to his new surroundings.

We can understand where Souness is coming from, but our midfield now has plenty of quality, while Mac Allister, Endo, Thiago Alcantara and Stefan Bajcetic all have the ability to operate in the deepest position.

We think the deal the club has reached has been very impressive.

Spending just over £145 million on four new players in today’s market, including a World Cup winner, is a quality deal.

Liverpool fans demanded the signing of a new centre-back to improve our strength in this area, but despite links with many players, this move never came to fruition.
It remains to be seen what Klopp’s plans are for the January window, but we’ll just have to wait and hope we’re still fighting on all four fronts at that point.

However, it seems that both Liverpool and the player honestly believe that the transfer is the best possible outcome for everyone involved.
