This and several important tasks form the ideals of January.

Liverpool moved to 23 points from 30 in the Premier League with a comfortable win over Nottingham Forest at Anfield this weekend. Goals from Diogo Yota, Darwin Nunes and Mohamed Salah completed the result and Tottenham could have claimed a bigger win if Luis Diaz’s VAR error had not left Tottenham with the nod.

With the Europa League group complete this week and Bournemouth advancing to the last 16 of the Carabao Cup, Liverpool are still easily qualified for all competitions and have a squad capable of challenging on all fronts.
Just like at the start of last season (before the Reds missed out on a top-four finish), Liverpool are flying under the radar.

The signing of Diaz in January of that season was crucial. This mid-campaign breakthrough gave Liverpool an extra element and helped them challenge teams on all four fronts.
We will have to reschedule a similar schedule this time.

Andre Trindadj looks like a genuine, relatively cheap player who could give Liverpool something new with a mid-season push in early 2024.
The Reds had a bid of $32m rejected by Brazilian club Fluminense last summer, according to Globo Esporte, but he recently admitted a summer exit was a possibility, although he did not agree to it.

“Every player dreams of playing in a big league, in a big club in Europe,” Andre recently explained to CONMEBOL Libertadores.
“But when the transfer window closed in January, [Fluminense coach Fernando] Diniz came and said he wanted me here before the end of the year, so I decided to keep my promise.” I had no idea that an offer of this amount would come. I told him I would stay there until the end of the season no matter what.

“Midway through the year and we were still in the round of 16 of the Copa Libertadores.
It was a very difficult decision.

If I had accepted the offer, I don’t know if I would have felt 100% at ease because I would have agreed with Diniz’s opinion. He really values his words and honesty. I know that if we do the right thing, good things will always happen. Then in January he told me that if I stayed he would undoubtedly make a bet and my value would go up.”

With Thiago Alcantara out of contract at the end of the season and Liverpool lacking quality midfield depth, Andre could be an excellent addition. Additionally, Alexis McAllister could fill the acquired role.

Next weekend is the Copa Libertadores final. After that, the preliminary arrangements for Andre’s transfer must be made in January, and Fluminense’s last game of the season will take place on December 6.

Now is the time to think about Andre’s next move, at least if not after the grand finale.
Elsewhere at Liverpool, signing a new defender should also be a priority until suitable options become available.

Like Thiago, Joel Matip’s contract expires at the end of the season. If Liverpool can find a replacement – preferably a left-footer – they’d better bring someone up front. As with Diaz, who arrived six months before Sadio Mane left, the overlap could be advantageous.
Outside of these two areas, there are no obvious gaps in Liverpool’s squad.
However, new contracts for Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold will be crucial to a solution. Both should be relatively straightforward, but Salah’s situation is more complex because of Saudi interests.

The last time Salah was extended, the process was not completed and it took a long time to renew the contract. The Saudi Arabian Pro League’s willingness to sign the 31-year-old can only help the player’s representatives in any negotiations.

Of course, ideally Liverpool could make progress and sign new contracts for three key figures. Van Dijk is confident of an extension despite being 32 years old. This season, he’s back to being close to his prime.

But with this season over, signing a player who can emulate Diaz’s influence and go beyond the summer will have the biggest impact on the campaign’s outcome in terms of trophies.
It is known that nothing can be won in the first month of the season, but Liverpool will do everything possible to be in the best position once the second part of the season starts.
