Liverpool transfer news: Xabi Alonso to prevent Jurgen Klopp from acquiring a defensive target

Former Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso has made his position known, defying speculation that Bayer Leverkusen defender Piero Hincapie would make a high-profile move to the Reds.

Even though Liverpool is currently leading the Premier League, there is still work to be done during the January transfer window.

With a well-earned 2-0 victory over Burnley on Boxing Day, Jurgen Klopp’s team returned to winning ways in the top flight and shot to the top, at least until Arsenal hosted West Ham at the Emirates on Thursday night. Although Klopp is happy with the players he brought in over the summer, he knows that more can be done to improve their prospects of winning the English title again.

This is a summary of Anfield’s most recent transfer news.

Alonso to stop Hincapie transfer

Xabi Alonso, a former midfielder for Liverpool and current manager of Bayer Leverkusen, has forbidden the Reds from signing center-back Piero Hincapie in January. 21-year-old Hincapie had been mooted for a move to Anfield, but Klopp dashed supporters’ dreams of a new defender being brought in to cover for the injured Joel Matip, who will miss the remainder of the season after rupturing his ACL.

However, German publication Kicker now claims that Alonso, along with teammate Leverkusen centre defender Jonathan Tah, who had been connected to Premier League rival Chelsea, won’t let Hincapie leave the Bay Arena. Although Leverkusen is amazingly still undefeated halfway through the season, the Ecuadorian international hasn’t been a regular starter for the former Liverpool playmaker. Nevertheless, Hincapie is one of the Bundesliga’s most promising defenders and can play left back.

Robinson claim quashed

In January, Liverpool is not going to pursue a trade for Antonee Robinson of Fulham, despite rumours that the Reds were getting ready to make an offer. Senior left-backs Andy Robertson and Kostas Tsimikas are both injured, but Klopp believes Robertson will be back by the end of January following shoulder surgery, while Tsimikas’s absence may take many months.

Although Robinson, 26, is an international student in the US, he was born in Milton Keynes. Before making an impression with Bolton Wanderers and Wigan Athletic, the Fulham defender was a youth player who spent more than ten years at Everton.

Nino inquiry made

According to reports, Liverpool is in the running to recruit Brazil international center-back Nino, along with Fulham, Roma, and Feyenoord. Renowned for his self-assurance when playing with the ball, the 26-year-old was a member of the Fluminense team that won the Copa Libertadores, which also featured highly-regarded midfielder Andre, another target for the Reds.

Nino has a meagre €7 million (£6.1 million) release clause, and his contract ends until the end of 2024. Following Matip’s season-ending injury, reports from Italy indicate that Liverpool is reportedly mulling a transfer after learning of his circumstances.

Kenan Yildiz

In the transfer war for Juventus youngster and alleged Arsenal target Kenan Yildiz, Liverpool is apparently one team to monitor.

Arsenal is reportedly interested in the highly-rated teenage Turkey international, according to reports from the Italian publication Calciomercato, but it appears that the Gunners are not the only team after the player.

According to the most recent report from Corriere dello Sport, which Sport Witness reported and translated, Liverpool appears to be a firm fan of Yildiz as well, and Juventus should be wary of the Reds’ attempts to sign the uneasy 18-year-old.

In order to replace Mohamed Salah in the long run, Liverpool would be wise to acquire a top young attacking player such as this one, given players like Diogo Jota and Luis Diaz have not had the best luck with injuries lately.

In the meanwhile, Arsenal would be well to bolster their offensive depth as well, since it seems likely that a major loss to Gabriel Martinelli or Bukayo Saka would spell difficulty for them.
