Liverpool will be hopeful that their injury issue finally starts to lighten up when they return to Premier League play on Saturday away to Nottingham Forest.

Following Wataru Endo and Ryan Gravenberch’s additions to the injury list during the League Cup final victory over Chelsea last weekend, Jurgen Klopp was left without 14 senior players when the team played Southampton in the FA Cup midweek due to Andy Robertson’s illness.

Even if certain stars will not be available until after the March international break, the Reds may still be able to welcome back a small number of players to the City Ground. After naming a young, very weakened team to play the Saints, we examine the adjustments Klopp might make at Forest.

Against Southampton, Jarell Quansah and Ibrahima Konate each played 45 minutes, but Liverpool’s starting lineup is probably going to be reinstated in the East Midlands.

Caoimhin Kelleher will stay in goal, and it’s likely that Conor Bradley will stay at right back. Robertson should return to the opposing side as a left-back if he recovers from his illness.

Should the Northern Irishman need a break and the Scot is unable to recuperate in time, Kostas Tsimikas is another option to keep his position at left-back. However, Joe Gomez is a backup on either wing.

After the Reds’ victory in the League Cup final, Alexis Mac Allister also became unwell, although he was able to recover sufficiently to be used as a substitute against the Saints. He will therefore return to the starting lineup.

Nevertheless, depending on how serious Endo’s injury was last weekend, the Argentine might start at number six or number eight. During his Friday afternoon pre-match press conference, Klopp will provide an update on the Japanese.

Dominik Szoboszlai was deemed “touch and go” to play against Southampton after being out with a hamstring injury since scoring in the 4-1 victory against Chelsea at the end of January. The Hungarian will be hoping to be cleared to play against Forest after being left out of the matchday squad against the Saints, even though his role will probably be limited to substitute duty at most.

James McConnell is also in the running to receive a complete Premier League debut, although Bobby Clark is now in the best position. Harvey Elliott could complete an engine-room trio if he wasn’t needed in an attack.

Nunez and Salah are back?

Darwin Nunez and Mohamed Salah were also considered “touch and go” to play Southampton, similar to Szoboszlai. In the end, they will be disappointed and hope that they can succeed against Forest.

Cody Gakpo will start up front, and Luis Diaz will go back to the left. If Nunez and Salah are judged too injured to play from the outset, Elliott should round out the squad.

Lewis Koumas and Jayden Danns, who both scored their first goals for the team against the Saints, will be itching for more senior minutes at the City Ground.
