Due to an injury a Liverpool defender has been ruled out of action until the season’s last game.

Luke Chambers, a young defender for Liverpool, sustained an injury while on loan at Wigan Athletic, which will keep him out of action for the majority of the remaining games.

The 19-year-old left back, who played for Kilmarnock on loan for a portion of the previous season, joined League One outfit Wigan in January after making four appearances for Liverpool’s first team during the first half of 2023–2024.

Chambers has been making an impression while out on loan, making 15 starts for Wigan and playing both out wide and at centre back. In addition, he has recorded two assists.

But manager Shaun Maloney has now revealed that the young player has sustained a muscular injury that will virtually put him out for the rest of the season after he missed the team’s 0-0 draw with Port Vale over the weekend.

Luke has had a really busy few weeks, so we’ve been doing our best to manage him, Maloney said to the Wigan Observer.

Sadly, I don’t believe he’ll return until the very final game of the campaign.

Wigan’s season will come to an end on April 27 when they take on Bristol Rovers. Wigan is currently in the middle of the league and has no chance of making the playoffs.

Outstanding performances

Maloney recently praised Chambers’ impact during his interim transition in remarks.

Luke has had an excellent loan, and I’ve been really happy with him, Maloney stated. “I’ve really like his demeanour; he’s put himself into each role I’ve given him. He has been very honest.

To put it simply, he improved our starting lineup since we signed him in January. It’s all the young man’s fault that he accomplished that.

Preston-born Chambers has long been regarded highly at Liverpool. In September of last year, the Reds defeated Leicester 3-1 in the Carabao Cup, and Chambers made his senior debut for the team.

He later made three appearances in the Europa League group stages and was even connected to a summer transfer to Bayer Leverkusen, the team of Xabi Alonso.

According to Premier League regulations, a player receives two match bans in the same league if they receive 10 bookings in their first 32 Premier League games. Yellow cards do not transfer to domestic cup tournaments.

Before they may unwind a little, the two must prevent receiving two more yellow cards apiece in the games against Crystal Palace (14/4), Manchester United (7/4) and Sheffield United (4/4).

Depending on when it is acquired, a two-game suspension might mean that one or both of them miss the Merseyside derby at Goodison Park on 24/4.

This season, both players have emerged as essential members of Jurgen Klopp’s squad: Nunez has established himself as the go-to central attacker when healthy, while Endo has surprised everyone by becoming the unwavering pillar in midfield.

The Uruguayan has not received a booking in any of his previous four league games, maybe demonstrating self-control in an effort to avoid getting suspended. Though Endo has only received three in his previous six, yellow cards are more of a workplace risk for defensive midfielders.
