PSV Eindhoven’s Johan Bakayoko has been linked with a move to Liverpool this summer, and the winger is poised to play this Friday when Belgium meet Slovakia at Euro 2024.

Johan Bakayoko, a Liverpool transfer target, will have an opportunity to impress today when Belgium face Slovakia in their Euro 2024 campaign opener.

Bakayoko was a standout for PSV Eindhoven in last season’s Eredivisie, scoring 12 goals and contributing nine assists in 33 league games as his team narrowly defeated Arne Slot’s Feyenoord by seven points.

According to reports in Belgium, Bakayoko is one of Liverpool’s main targets this summer, and new manager Slot has already given his consent. The 21-year-old is expected to be a long-term successor for Mohamed Salah, but Borussia Dortmund and RB Leipzig are also interested in his talents.

When asked about his future earlier this month, Bakayoko replied cryptically to Dutch weekly Het Belang van Limburg: “The only thing I can say is that next year I will be on a football pitch somewhere.”

Bakayoko had the option to go to the Premier League last summer, with the player disclosing that Burnley approached him. However, despite the best efforts of his compatriot Vincent Kompany, Bakayoko chose to remain with PSV.

“I got a call from Kompany last year,” Bakayoko explained. “He then described his vision. That was nice. I clarified my viewpoint. It was a fantastic conversation, but that happened last summer.”

Brentford also approached Bakayoko last summer, but the midfielder was exclusively focused on “preparing for the Euros” and did not want to transfer to England.

“I didn’t mention leaving, so I didn’t understand why people were saying, ‘Oh, why didn’t he move?'”

“There was no option to leave. But that is a part of football. People share their opinions. I envision myself playing everywhere and anywhere. I watch the Premier League and have pals there.

“I also have pals who play in Germany, so I watch many of their games. But this season, I haven’t even mentioned leaving. I was just thinking about training for the Euros and doing my best to stay fit.”
