A young Bundesliga player who was making big waves was once a target for Liverpool; nonetheless, the prospect regretted passing up the opportunity to play for the Reds.

The “biggest mistake” Donis Avdijaj has ever made in his career, according to him, was turning down Liverpool.

The former Bundesliga standout was much sought after following an impressive debut with Schalke’s junior teams. Avdijaj, who first joined the Miners in 2011, scored an incredible 76 goals for their under-17 and under-19 teams in 77 games before moving up to the senior squad.

Before he signed a professional contract in Gelsenkirchen, Real Madrid and Premier League heavyweights were impressed by his explosive youth displays. He struggled to measure up to the expectations that came with his prolific academy record, and as the Liverpool Echo notes, he began to regret that choice.

“My biggest mistake, which I bitterly regret, was turning down another mega offer from Liverpool before I signed the long contract with Schalke, which was a matter close to my heart,” Avdijaj remarked in an interview with Sport1 in 2020. I had one from Real Madrid as well.”

The Kosovo international left Schalke in 2018 to sign with Dutch team Willem II, having made just 12 appearances in the first squad during a seven-year tenure. With little success, he made his way through clubs in Switzerland, Cyprus, Turkey, and Scotland.

In the present day, the 27-year-old has established himself with Hartberg in the Austrian Bundesliga. This past season, the forward scored 12 goals and contributed six assists while playing for Markus Schopp, the head coach who had previously coached him at Sturm Graz.

When Avdijaj was first connected to Liverpool, Brendan Rodgers was in charge at Anfield; nonetheless, this is thought to have been a turbulent time for the team’s transfer negotiations. Later, after Jurgen Klopp became manager, the team calmed the ship, a position they intend to maintain under Slot’s replacement.

Avdijaj came on the scene with extraordinary ability, and while he has made some mistakes along the way, his confidence has rarely wavered. He said to Sport1: “I know that it is up to me what my sports future looks like, whether or not I transfer to Liverpool.

“Whether I’ve played for five years at one club or ten clubs in five years doesn’t really matter.” For me, playing football and showcasing my abilities is all that matters in the end.”
