The Premier League handed Liverpool a letter alerting them about “fraudulent” transfers.

The English top flight’s twenty clubs have received a letter from the Premier League reminding them that any transfer activity that is found to be fraudulent would result in sanctions.

Liverpool and the rest of the Premier League have received a strong warning from the league about the repercussions of participating in “fraudulent” transfer transactions. This occurs right after a flurry of intriguing trades throughout the league.

Recently, Everton has gained attention after paying a cool $11 million (£9 million/€10.5 million) to Aston Villa for the signing of England Under-20 star Tim Iroegbunam, raising eyebrows. Lewis Dobbin, a homegrown star, signed a contract that oddly matched the price to join Villa at the same time.

Not content to stop there, Aston Villa is about to reach an agreement with Chelsea for Omari Kellyman, who is valued at about $24 million (£19 million/€22 million). Ian Maatsen is set to change his Chelsea blues for Villa colours after Kellyman’s probable move to the Blues.

With claims that the clubs involved are trying to artificially inflate their financial records to meet the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules before the fiscal deadline on June 30, these complex transactions have come under scrutiny.

According to the Telegraph, the Premier League has now written to each of its 20 member teams, warning them that any fraudulent transfer activity will not be tolerated. The report also states that in order to confirm that the agreements were reached in “good faith,” the league may request access to details of the negotiation procedures.

In order to stop any “false inflation” in transfers and business transactions, the Premier League has the power to apply fair market value regulations on a transaction if they find that it wasn’t carried out at “arm’s length”.

Therefore, in the event that it is determined that a transfer price was paid in an inflated manner and that the transaction was not completed in “good faith,” the Premier League may demand return of the transfer cost in full or in part.
