This summer, Liverpool came dangerously close to selling a player who has been at Anfield since 2015; his medical was even scheduled.

In his previous position as Director of Football, Michael Edwards, who is currently back at Anfield in a CEO of Football role, was particularly successful in sales. He made £19 million from the sale of Dominic Solanke, a striker he signed for free, and £15 million from the sale of Jordan Ibe, to name a couple of examples.

Recent reports suggest that Liverpool came dangerously close to offloading a player this summer for a cool £41.5 million.

Joe Gomez is nearly sold by Liverpool

According to a report published in the Daily Mail, Liverpool has agreed to transfer Joe Gomez to Newcastle for £45 million this summer.

That’s not all, though; it seems that the England international was actually just a few steps away from quitting Anfield.

Gomez was eager to get back to his preferred position as a right-sided central defence, according to The Daily Mail. A physical was scheduled for the Liverpool No. 2 in Leipzig, as he was already in Germany with England for the UEFA Euro 2024.

In a desperate attempt to find a solution to their financial problems, Newcastle offered Arne Slot the opportunity to sign Anthony Gordon for £75 million as part of the deal, and Liverpool consented to the transaction.

In the end, Newcastle discovered alternative means of raising money in order to meet the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR): they sold Yankuba Minteh to Brighton for £33 million and Elliot Anderson to Nottingham Forest for £35 million.

After Gomez was originally signed by Liverpool for just £3.5 million from Charlton in June 2015, the Reds would have made a whopping £41.5 million profit if they had really sold the London player to Newcastle for £45 million.

It’s possible that the issue not over

The fact that Gomez was content to move from Liverpool to Newcastle this summer intrigues us.

The Catford native seems unnecessary for Slot, even though he played 51 games for Liverpool last season and 224 overall. The Daily Mail also reports that the Reds considered Leny Yoro prior to the Frenchman’s transfer to Manchester United, and Crystal Palace’s No. 6 Marc Guehi is still being considered.

This, along with Liverpool’s approval of Gomez’s move to Newcastle, tells us that the situation is still open, especially considering the report’s claim that Saudi Arabian teams are also considering summer moves for the 27-year-old.

Gomez is reportedly attracting interest from Bayern Munich as well this summer.
