A key point in Liverpool’s Premier League title challenge is revealed by Jurgen Klopp

As we approach the final few months of the season, Liverpool is still leading the Premier League title fight.

The Reds have had an incredible run of play in the second half of the season.

Liverpool’s ability to compete was demonstrated to Klopp with a goalless draw with Manchester United.

Jurgen Klopp has acknowledged that the first indication that his team could contend for the Premier League title this year came from Liverpool’s 0-0 draw with Manchester United in December.

Liverpool was still winning games before that one, but a few others, including draws against Brighton and Luton, losses to Tottenham, and an exciting 4-3 victory over Fulham, had raised doubts about Klopp’s team’s ability to win the championship.

Ever since, Liverpool has had incredible success in 2024. With only two points surrendered thus far in the current calendar year, the Carabao Cup winners are leading the battle for the championship. Although they have played one fewer game than Arsenal, they are now ranked second in the standings and may take the top spot back on Thursday if they defeat Sheffield United.

Prior to that match, Klopp gave an explanation of how he thought Liverpool’s season was transformed by a goalless draw with United.

“I said after the United match that I loved the game,” Klopp stated. “We didn’t win—the score was 0-0—but that was the game in which we once again adopted a full counter-press strategy.

Before that game, I had made a request for it. We have to figure out a method because, as I mentioned before, playing with 10 or nine guys does not allow you to ask for a counter-press. So far, everything is going well. There are several strategies you must use to win games.

“But we talked about that specifically before United. We were dominant in a new way, and we have asked of ourselves ever since, so I was really delighted with the outcome.

“You can’t just take the ball and shoot it straight at the goal, but you have a good chance of finding a finish if you win it back up the pitch. That makes perfect sense to me as a reason [for the quantity of shots], and ever since, the season has evolved to reflect our desired style of play.

“As I mentioned before, the beginning of the season was a tremendously strange one for us to achieve results, but I think I heard once or twice that Liverpool is not convincing yet—they get results, but it is not entirely convincing.

“We didn’t feel that way, but I still remember United like it was yesterday. Before the game, we had a meeting, and the boys delivered. Ever since, we have repeated that.”
