Liverpool are looking into a transfer that would take RB Leipzig star Dominik Szoboszlai to Anfield
Former RB Salzburg and Leeds United manager Jesse March has previously said Liverpool goal Dominik Szoboszlai is “as talented” as Manchester City star Erling Haaland.
The Norwegian talisman took the Premier League by storm in his debut season in England, capturing the golden boot. In his destructive run in the top flight, he broke Reds striker Mohamed Salah’s record as the most prolific striker in a season with 36 goals.
Liverpool are exploring the possibility of a deal for RB Leipzig midfielder Szoboszlai as Jürgen Klopp continues to weigh his options for rebuilding.
Alexis Mac Allister has become the first piece of the puzzle following his arrival from Brighton & Hove Albion in June, while the likes of Khephren Thuram and Ryan Gravenberch are popular chefs at Anfield.
Szoboszlai, 22, could cost the Reds £60m if they fulfill his release clause – but they may need to act quickly as reports indicate the fixed transfer fee expires as early as June 30.
Marsch mentored the two during their partnership at Salzburg before Haaland moved to Borussia Dortmund and Szoboszlai followed the path of many from Austria to RB Leipzig in 2021.
The Hungarian won four Austrian Bundesliga titles with the club and was named player of the year before moving to Saxony. The pair came together during the American tactician’s brief tenure at Leipzig, and Marsch has previously hailed Liverpool’s goal.

“In terms of talent, there aren’t many better players who can play [Szoboszlai’s] position.” Some are strong, others are technical, others are good tactically and others can defend themselves well or run a lot,” he said.
“However, Dominik is special because he combines all these skills. Dominik is as talented as Erling Haaland.”
Should he move to Merseyside, Szoboszlai will take on Haaland as the Reds look to take on Manchester City again. Liverpool will be hoping last season was a twist as they lost pace and finished fifth as the Citizens won the treble.
Haaland’s influence when he first arrived in Austria was evident when the Anfield goal spoke highly of Pep Guardiola’s star player.
Szoboszlai said: “We are still friends, we keep in touch. When I came to Salzburg, [Munas] Dabbur was the main thing that helped me get into professional sport. I knew how difficult it is to fit in with the team, even if everyone is friendly and tries to help.
“They already know each other, so it can be difficult to fit in. When Erling arrived, he was the only new player that summer and everyone knew each other. I figured I would have been in the same situation, so I was very open with him and helped him with whatever he needed.
“We used to hang out together, even though he didn’t do much, and we also went out to eat and stuff like that. We became good friends and I helped him get to know the team while he was helping me learn English, so we both helped each other.”
