After a fight with cancer, former England manager Sven-Goran Eriksson passed away on Monday, but not before Liverpool helped the renowned coach realise a cherished goal.

Just a few months before he passed away, Sven-Goran Eriksson was moved to tears by a kind gesture from Liverpool.

After a brief fight with pancreatic cancer, Eriksson, 76, passed away, it was revealed on Monday. In January, the former manager of Manchester City and England declared he had been given less than a year to live.

However, in March, he got to fulfil a childhood ambition of his by leading a team of Liverpool greats in a match against Ajax. And the occasion reached the late great, who was observed crying prior to, during, and following a special cameo for a club that held significant personal significance for him.

“I will always remember that very vividly. Stunningly gorgeous,” he exclaimed to reporters following Liverpool’s 4-2 victory. “My entire life, I’ve wanted to be a reserve for Liverpool. It finally happened, and it was a truly lovely day.

“The crowd, the game, the players, everything, fantastic, and thank you to Liverpool for giving me this opportunity, to invite me for such an important game – it’s not points but the importance of the game is incredible.”

On the pitch, the Swede was spotted crying as he thanked the supporters, who cheered him on loudly in Merseyside. Eriksson continued by explaining the significance of the event.

Tears started to fall. It was quite emotional. It’s been my ideal team my entire life; I supported Liverpool even while I played for England, but I was too shy to admit it at the time,” he continued. “It’s a good finish, to finish with Liverpool, it can’t be much better than that.”

In the past, Sven has stated that his love of Liverpool came from his father, but he has never understood why his father supported the Reds to such an extent. As Eriksson previously stated, his father “won’t miss one game” if the Merseysiders are on TV because he is that devoted.

Eriksson’s final managerial position was with the Philippines, but the partnership was just temporary, lasting until 2019. Nevertheless, he had the ideal justification to come out of retirement for one last try, and although pride was the only thing at risk, it was evident that this meant everything to the honouree of Anfield.
