Recent Liverpool news: a Reds defender has been summoned back for the second half of the season, and Mohamed Salah may earn a contract extension.

Liverpool defeated Newcastle 4-2 at Anfield to start 2024 on a high note, with goals from Mohamed Salah twice, Cody Gakpo, and Curtis Jones. The Reds’ next schedule includes a trip to FA Cup rivals Arsenal on January 7 and the opening leg of their Carabao Cup semifinal matchup with Fulham. This is your summary of the most recent Liverpool news.

Mohamed Salah ‘closing’ in on contract extension

Mohamed Salah, a standout player for Liverpool, has had a fantastic season. The 31-year-old, who has played in 19 Premier League games this season and scored 14 goals, is scheduled to travel to Ivory Coast to represent his country at the AFCON. He is reportedly “edging closer” to extending his contract at Anfield, according to Football Transfers.

Salah’s current contract is scheduled to expire in the summer of 2025, making him 33 years old at that point. However, according to Football Transfers, both parties are willing to extend the deal past that date. Given that the Egyptian shows no signs of slowing down, this could be fantastic news for Liverpool supporters.

Salah is presently equal with Erling Haaland of Manchester City for the most goals scored in the Premier League after contributing 26 goals in 25 games across all competitions for Liverpool this season. Both Trent Alexander-Arnold and Virgil van Dijk have contracts that expire in 2025, but it is anticipated that they will work out fresh extensions.

Defender called back from loan by Liverpool

Recent Liverpool news: a Reds defender has been summoned back for the second half of the season, and Mohamed Salah may earn

Rhys Williams has been called back by Liverpool from his loan at Aberdeen in Scotland, the club announced on its official website and social media accounts. Williams travelled north for the season last summer after agreeing to a season-long loan contract, but throughout the first half of the season, the 22-year-old made no league appearances for the Scottish team.

Although Liverpool lost defenders Andy Robertson, Joël Matip, and Kostas Tsimikas to injuries in the first part of the season, Williams has been brought back primarily due to his lack of minutes. With four competitions the Reds will play in over the next few weeks and months, it is unclear if he will provide some much-needed backup at the back. He might be sent on loan to a different team where he could play more.

Williams hasn’t played a minute for Liverpool’s first team since 2020–21, when injuries devastated the back line. Williams made nine appearances for the squad that season. It’s probable that he will continue to cover for Jürgen Klopp at Anfield. If Liverpool gets past Arsenal in the FA Cup, the defender might play in the first round.

Williams made just one game for Aberdeen, which lost 5-3 to Peterhead in the Scottish Challenge Cup in August. Williams has a deal with Liverpool that expires in the summer of 2026.

The Japanese midfield player has truly established himself with the team, but sadly, international duty calls.

Following Liverpool FC’s 2-0 road victory against Burnley, manager Jürgen Klopp gave particular recognition to midfielder Wataru Endō. The Japanese midfielder recently reached a unique milestone in terms of consecutive appearances and has appeared to be very at ease lately.

During the post-match press conference, our manager discussed Endō’s recent performances as follows:

“I must admit, I really enjoyed this game. It’s unfortunate that after finding his footing, he is now off to the Asian Cup, but that’s life. What a player, what a youngster, and how very significant. We have to play without him at least in January, but he is present when we play Newcastle. The boys then depart, so we’ll have to figure out another route. However, I am very glad for him right now. Although it took him some time to truly demonstrate his abilities, I’m glad that we can now witness it.

Monday’s match against Newcastle United will be Wataru’s final before he leaves for Japan’s AFC Asian Cup training camp. The team, one of the favourites going into the tournament, will be captained by Endō. Iraq, Vietnam, and Indonesia are among its group members.

If they made it to the final, he would miss seven games:

– the FA Cup tie at Arsenal

– both legs of the EFL Cup semi-finals against Fulham

– Premier League games against Bournemouth,  Arsenal, Chelsea, and Burnley

Wataru, best of luck. We’ll see you when you return.
