Barcelona is reportedly interested in Luis Diaz, according to a report by the Spanish publication Fichajes. In anticipation of the summer transfer window in 2024, the defending La Liga champions are searching the market for a versatile attacker. Thus, the 26-year-old attacker from Liverpool has become a realistic target.

From his January 2022 arrival to Anfield from FC Porto, Luis Diaz has been a crucial member of the Liverpool team. The Colombian international, who has shown to be worth the investment, cost the Merseyside club €47 million. Aside from a few injuries, he has left his imprint with excellent last-third performances.

Despite a few health problems and off-field distractions, the 26-year-old has had a strong 2023–24 season. Diaz has made 14 appearances for Liverpool so far this season, scoring four goals and providing one assist. Barcelona has been paying attention to the player’s development in the meantime.

It’s interesting to note that Barcelona was considering Diaz before to his move to Liverpool. However, especially halfway through the season, the Catalan giants were in no financial position to pay anything approaching €47 million to guarantee his services. Nevertheless, given his success with Liverpool, they are still willing to sign the player.

Barcelona even contemplated signing Diaz before the summer transfer window of 2023. However, a transfer never happened because Liverpool wouldn’t let him go. Considering the importance of the 26-year-old Colombian winger, that position may not have altered.

Given that Raphinha and Ferran Torres’ futures at Camp Nou are unknown, it is hardly surprise that the Catalan club is interested in Diaz. Premier League executives are interested in both players. Therefore, Barcelona needs to make a wide attacker acquisition before the summer transfer window opens in 2024. Barcelona could therefore pursue Diaz.

However, Barcelona’s precarious financial position means that cost will once more be a subject of contention. If Liverpool decides to sell the 26-year-old, they will probably want for more than €47 million. However, it doesn’t seem likely that they will consider severing ties with the Colombian international.

Jamie Carragher lists the final two transfers Liverpool must complete to win title

After Sunday’s draw at Luton, Liverpool lost momentum in the Premier League title battle. Jamie Carragher highlighted that the team still needs two players to seriously challenge Man City.

In order to position Liverpool as championship contenders in the Premier League this season, Jamie Carragher is adamant that they need to bring in a new holding midfielder and full-back.

The former Reds defender discussed how simpler it was to counterattack against Luton during Jurgen Klopp’s team’s disappointing 1-1 draw with them as opposed to Manchester City, who had won five of the previous six Premier League titles.

This outcome keeps Liverpool three points behind Pep Guardiola’s team, who crushed Bournemouth 6-1 on Saturday, and in third place in the standings. In their first six road games this season in the division, the Reds have only triumphed twice.

Carragher thinks that in order for Liverpool to contend for the championship, they still need a specialist holding midfielder. He said to Sky Sports on Sunday, “Liverpool’s midfield is much better than it was last season, but they still don’t have a top holding midfield player.”

“MacAllister’s not a holding midfield player,” mirror Carragher continued. He’s got strong receiving skills, but he struggles defensively and lacks some speed for that position, so I believe they can still get better there.

With Andy Robertson out due to injury, concerns were also raised about Liverpool’s defensive cover in the full-back positions. Since then, Kostas Tsimikas and Joe Gomez have filled the position, but Carragher thinks it’s more crucial to add a right-back.

“I think Liverpool could do with a great defender who can play a couple of positions in the back four, rather than so much a player for a specific position,” he continued. They decided to start Gomez at left back today rather than Tsimikas because they believed he would be more capable in defence.

“I still believe that Liverpool could use another player in that position. Trent could be released into midfield at different times, and you could play someone there against certain opponents who is maybe tougher and stronger defensively.”

In summarising his views on Liverpool’s current situation, Carragher predicts that although Klopp’s team has improved from the group that finished an unimpressive fifth last season, they will not be able to launch a meaningful title challenge.

“I believe Liverpool is not prepared to win the league,” asserted the ex-defender. “Jurgen Klopp and Liverpool fans, I believe, are aware of that at this time. They aim to return to the top four, but I believe they need a better defender and another midfielder to be competitive once more
