After the 2023–2024 season, Jurgen Klopp will leave his position as manager of Liverpool, despite speculation that he may succeed Julian Nagelsmann as manager of Germany following Euro 2024.
When he leaves his position as manager of Liverpool at the end of the current campaign, Jurgen Klopp has made clear what he will do.
On January 26, Klopp made public his intention to resign from his position, ending his tenure as manager, which he had started in October 2015. The news generated a great deal of conjecture over his replacement, with Rubem Amorim lately surpassing Xabi Alonso as the clear favourite.
Although Klopp has often stated he will take a break from the game before making any decisions, he has been linked to the position of manager of the Germany national team. He declared that he was “running out of energy” for the decision he had made and made it plain that he would not be discussing his future plans for the duration of the campaign.
However, he did make a mistake when he was addressing at a press conference on Thursday before Liverpool’s Europa League quarterfinal first leg against Atalanta. When asked if he had ever considered becoming a Serie A coach, Klopp said, “Italian food is the only thing I know that is Italian.” I have no plans to pursue a management position in the near future. I have no plans right now, but ask me in a year.”
After a challenging 2022–2023 season, Klopp informed his bosses of his decision in November and said it had been simmering since the summer. In January, he stated, “I didn’t expect that when I made the decision. That was a relief.” It’s mixed today. I’m not feeling as attached as I will be when I finally go. Not only did I have to inform the owners, but also the players and supporters, which were two crucial tasks.
“The players’ response was excellent because we had been friends for a long time. I’m here; I don’t say stuff like that and then leave. If you would like, I can respond to 500,000 queries today, but that’s all I have to say.
There were a few tears shed, but overall there wasn’t much emotion as I had to inform certain individuals a little early. That is typical. The club needs time to plan for the future while we take care of the present, so now is the best time to do it. I used to know how I felt, therefore the relief is gone now.”
Even though Klopp has maintained that he will take a year off, the connections to the Germany position are still there. Although Julian Nagelsmann will captain the squad at Euro 2024 this summer, it is still unknown what his long-term plans are. This week, Rudi Voller, a longtime supporter of the Liverpool manager, inked a new deal to serve as director of the German FA. “I do believe that Jogi Low can still do it for a while, but at some point it will be Jurgen Klopp,” Voller stated back in 2020.
