'Best of all time' - Gary Neville makes bold Trent Alexander-Arnold prediction following Liverpool 'liability' shift

After Trent Alexander-Arnold of Liverpool scored a goal against Manchester City, Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville gave him advise on how to become the best right-back of all time.

Trent Alexander-Arnold of Liverpool, according to Gary Neville, has the potential to surpass all previous right backs in history.

In the Reds’ tie with Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium, Alexander-Arnold was the team’s standout player. In Jurgen Klopp’s system, the right-back took up his typical position, frequently switching from the wings into midfield, and he scored Liverpool’s equaliser with a superb finish that went low and into the far corner.

Alexander-Arnold’s skill with the ball was likened by Sky Sports pundit Neville to that of Man City’s missing midfield hero: “World-class midfielder Kevin De Bruyne was hurt today. He is an amazing passer and delivery guy. He said on the Gary Neville podcast that Trent Alexander-Arnold, a right-back, is on par with him.

The former England and Manchester United full-back, though, has frequently chastised Alexander-Arnold for his defensive prowess. Though Neville thought the 25-year-old played well against Man City, he still has a lot of room to grow.

He went on, “He doesn’t have to be the best right-back in the world defensively; all he has to be as a defender is sort of semi-competent.” “You don’t expect him to be a defensive right-back like Kyle Walker, Ivanovic, or [Cesar] Azpilicueta, who was the opposite. That is not necessary of him.

“What he needs to be, though, is not a liability. Over the past three or four years, there have been instances in which Liverpool’s big games have featured him being too easy to beat and too easy to get to.”

Neville is adamant that Alexander-Arnold can become football’s greatest right-back of all time if he focuses on his defensive responsibilities. Despite winning eight Premier League titles as a right-back, the expert feels that the Liverpool player has completely transformed the position.

His moves on the dance floor are simply incredible. There’s a night and day difference between myself and him. Neville acknowledged, “I can’t even relate to what he’s doing on the pitch.

“He spends fifty to sixty percent of the game playing in central midfield. He scores goals on the offensive end and assists on others’ goals. He’s hitting figures that conservatives can’t match.

“He has the makings of the greatest right-back in history. But because he is currently struggling, or has battled, to break into the England team, he will need to take his defence a little more seriously. He’ll also need to be a resilient, gritty defensive player when Liverpool and England are struggling.

It’s something I believe he can improve upon. I continue to believe that he has the potential to be a very strong defender.

Klopp was concerned that against Man City, two important Liverpool players might have suffered significant injuries. After coming from behind to earn a draw with Manchester City on Saturday, Liverpool left the Etihad Stadium with a point.

Trent Alexander-Arnold responded with a long-range striker in the second half of play, but Erling Haaland gave the Premier League champions the lead in the first.

The point drops the pair to first and second in the standings, but it gives Arsenal a chance to take the lead on Saturday night if they defeat Brentford.

Although the outcome will please Jurgen Klopp more than the other manager, the German coach might have lost two important players in the process.

Diogo Jota appeared to have a muscle injury when he left the pitch after 54 minutes of play in the second half. After the full-time whistle, Alisson was seen hobbling after going down with a hamstring injury later in the match.

After the game, Klopp discussed the injuries with Sky Sports, stating that Jota might miss some time due to a muscle ailment and that he will have to wait and see how his goalie is doing.

Although the Brazilian international is one of Liverpool’s most reliable players, Klopp is devastated by Alisson’s departure. The Reds do, however, have a backup for the attacker.
