When Virgil van Dijk made remarks inside the Liverpool locker room at Wembley following their victory over Chelsea in the Carabao Cup final last month, it caused some controversy.
Virgil van Dijk acknowledges that he should have said something different following Liverpool’s victory against Chelsea in the Carabao Cup final.
Deep into injury time at Wembley, Van Dijk scored the game-winning goal to give the Reds a well-deserved victory. The Dutchman was the star of the show, and Liverpool shared a little video of Van Dijk saying, “They thought I was finished,” on social media, which was followed by a knowing shrug.
In response to those who questioned the towering center-back during a challenging 2022–2023 season in which Liverpool could only finish fifth in the Premier League, the player tweeted a sharp remark. Now that he’s back to his best, Van Dijk regrets saying the line, which has received 1.5 million views on Twitter, in retrospect.
He added, “I shouldn’t have said that because I don’t want to come across as bad.” “That was a portion of the emotion I was releasing because I was experiencing a wide range of emotions that day across my entire body. The previous season was underwhelming.
“I wasn’t disappointing in the sense that I was horrible; in fact, I didn’t feel that way at all. Instead, I fell short of my expectations and lacked the consistency that I had come to expect from every game. I don’t like noise around me, so maybe that was a nice thing to say to get it out of me.
“The summer break was a huge help, and it helped me get in good shape.” This season, I feel quite at ease in every element of the game. Of course, confidence plays a major role in how you play, but overall, I believe I have improved greatly in possession.
The manager recently stated that wearing the armband is not the only step in the process; many other things also need to be considered. That has been aided by my responsibilities, but I believe I have made progress. I want to keep having fun with it and see where it goes.
Given that so many of his teammates have been sidelined with injuries in recent months, Van Dijk’s play has been crucial to Liverpool’s success. He has guided Jurgen Klopp’s team from the back, assisting them in sharing the Premier League lead and keeping them in the running for the FA Cup and Europa League.
He went on, “This season, I feel very comfortable in every aspect of the game.” “Obviously, confidence is a major motivator, but overall, I believe I’ve made significant progress with possession. The manager mentioned the other day that wearing the armband is not the only thing to do, and I believe there are several other things that have clicked once more.
“I feel great, and having responsibilities has helped with that, but I also feel like I’ve made progress again. I truly love the progress I made in both my possession and defence techniques.
