The “semi-automatic offside”, already used by FIFA and UEFA, will not be introduced in the Premier League next season.A majority of Premier League clubs have voted against the introduction of a “semi-automatic offside system” but there will be “four additional cameras in stadiums to assist VARs,” the club said.
The “semi-automatic” offside call system uses limb tracking technology to determine whether or not a player is offside.
It has been successfully adopted in the Champions League and World Cup, but will probably have to wait until at least 2024 before it can be used in the Premier League.
It is believed to be more accurate than the current system in English football, but “some insiders say it shouldn’t be considered infallible,” writes the Times’ chief sports journalist Martyn Ziegler.
“The Premier League will continue non-live testing of the technology,” though. Although the English top flight have decided not to introduce him, there will still be improvements next season.
The four new stadium cameras are intended to fix similar bugs to those that directly affected Liverpool last season.
When Arsenal beat the Reds 3-2 last October, Bukayo saw Saka offside ahead of Gabriel Martinelli’s opening goal, but VAR were unable to thoroughly verify this as he was out of sight cameras.
