One undroppable and one wildcard option are changing Liverpool’s “first-choice” attack.

Due to the abundance of dangerous attacking options in Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool squad, ECHO writers discuss their first-choice front three for the upcoming season.

Rarely has Jurgen Klopp had the kind of depth up front that he does right now at Liverpool.

Despite Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino’s departures over the past 12 months, the additions of Luis Diaz, Darwin Nunez, and Cody Gakpo during the same period have given Klopp a variety of exciting ways to change up his attacking options.

Paul Gorst – Jota down the middle

There should be plenty of competition for the top positions moving forward if all five of Klopp’s senior strikers have full and uninterrupted preseason schedules.

Jurgen Klopp doesn’t really have an obvious solution to this specific problem, which at least shows how much flexibility the Reds manager has in terms of his forward options for the upcoming season.

For instance, Darwin Nunez, Diogo Jota, and Cody Gakpo can all play off the left of that front three in addition to the Dutch international, who made his name with PSV in that specific position, allowing Klopp the option of using a 4-2-3-1 formation.

While Mohamed Salah is unquestionably Klopp’s top choice for the right, a fully fit Luis Diaz is a significant piece of the puzzle down the left.

In all competitions, Nunez scored fifteen goals in his debut season, which more than hinted at his potential moving forward. Nunez will be able to build on a promising debut season with more acclimatization to Liverpool life and team-wide improvement, while the silky, versatile Gakpo steadily increased his impact after joining mid-season from PSV. The season might be successful for the Dutchman.

Jota, a former Wolves forward, can play a variety of positions, but he excels as a goal scorer who can also play through the middle and in the penalty area. Additionally, the Portugal international can help resolve the problem by spending a significant amount of time in the team injury-free given that Salah was overused as a goal scorer last season.

Diaz fills the position on the left, and if Liverpool can get him back to the form he displayed after joining from Porto in the second half of the 2021/22 season, he will add another dimension to the attack that simply wasn’t there last season.

Nunez and Gakpo are viable backup options, and whoever Klopp chooses as his first pick will have plenty of goal threats throughout the upcoming season thanks to a forward line full of talent.

Salah, Jota, and Diaz comprise my front three.

Theo Squires – Nunez keeps drawing me back in.

When asked who I think are the strongest front three for Liverpool, my initial response isn’t all that novel. Cody Gakpo in the middle, Luis Diaz on the left, and Mohamed Salah to the right. We’re taking the latter two because they are Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino’s direct replacements. Moving on to the next question.

A nagging thought, however, is still present in my mind. Simply put, it isn’t thrilling enough.
Darwin Nunez, you know, keeps pulling me back in, where’s the chaos and the unpredictable?

He’s a crazy a**, but Kopites love crazy a**s. In his first season on Merseyside, he scored a respectable 15 goals, but the best is yet to come.

In his second season with Benfica, the Uruguayan burst onto the scene, scoring a staggering 34 goals that initially caught Liverpool’s attention. He is unplayable at his best. You must choose him if you want to see that striker this season, one who speaks English better and is free of the bothersome injuries he dealt with the previous year.

There are obviously many ifs and buts in that. He continues to be Jurgen Klopp’s wild card right now. He might, however, emerge as the German’s MVP.

Although we’ll be “treated” to another month without his services mid-season as he leaves for Africa Cup of Nations duty, Salah obviously starts on the right after yet another 30-goal season. It’s a good thing Liverpool has enough depth for other players to step up when he’s not there.

Diaz receives the nod on the left while donning that infamous number seven shirt at the moment. Prior to that tragic knee injury last year, he was the Reds’ best player. Let’s hope the Colombian can regain such electrifying levels soon, eager to make up for lost time.

In the event that not, you always have Diogo Jota as a backup goal scorer to fall back on. While in, Gakpo Liverpool has discovered the best Firmino replacement Kopites could have hoped for. If Nunez’s insanity isn’t being unleashed to devastating effect against Premier League defenses across the nation, he can get the nod in the middle.

Diaz, Nunez/Gakpo, and Salah make up my front three.

According to Tom Cavilla- Salah is the only thing that is certain, Changes to Liverpool's "first-choice" attack include one option undroppable and a wildcard.

There are plenty of excellent attacking options available to Liverpool, giving Jurgen Klopp many options to think about for the upcoming season.

Roberto Firmino’s departure has opened up one spot in this department, but the front three positions in the side are still in high demand.

Darwin Nunez was used on the left and in the middle during his first season on Merseyside, but the Uruguayan’s future is still up in the air. It is difficult to ignore Cody Gakpo, who joined the team in the middle of last season and was able to make a bigger difference in the same two positions.

Although Luis Diaz, a Colombian, should be returning to his left wing position immediately after fully recovering from his knee injury, many fans had forgotten about him during his extended absence during the previous season.

After a four-month absence, Diogo Jota also had to fight for a spot in the starting eleven in 2022–23, but he provided a welcome reminder of his talent by scoring seven goals in the final games of the campaign. Despite his stellar recent performance, Portugal’s international player is best used as a game-changer who comes on from the bench, a quality title-winning teams always seem to have.

The only constant in Liverpool’s front three is Mohamed Salah; the Egyptian has now saved the team six seasons in a row when they have needed him most. He will be aiming for another incredible goal return, you can be sure of that.

Nunez has the capacity to produce on a consistent basis, but it is up to Klopp to determine when and how to utilize the former Benfica striker to his fullest potential. The 24-year-old and Jota are both prepared to take over if Gakpo falters.
