Liverpool won 2-1 on Easter Sunday, barely defeating Brighton. Following the match, Jürgen Klopp made the following comments, congratulating a player for the game-winning goal.
On Easter Sunday, Liverpool defeated Brighton 2-1 at Anfield. Jürgen Klopp was happy with his team’s response after they overcame a deficit to win all three points.
After trailing early to a strong finish from Danny Welbeck, the Reds needed goals from Mohamed Salah and Luis Díaz to secure a victory that moved them to the top of the Premier League standings. Liverpool can only lose to Arsenal at the Etihad Stadium against Manchester City in order to move Arsenal to the top of the standings.
After the game, Klopp was happy with his team’s defensive effort. He also mentioned a scene from his post-match interview that he called “unbelievable.”
Speaking to BBC Match of the Day following Liverpool’s victory, he stated: “I would have wanted to not be down 1-0. The best we could have done against De Zerbi’s Brighton was to go up four or five goals, but that’s not how it worked out.
“We played really well, and while defence is always tough, we’ve never come near to Brighton in the past, but this time we were composed. Let’s go on to the first of the previous ten.
“That ball [made by Dominik Szoboszlai] is amazing. Seeing that, it’s the originality and the calibre. He sees Macca and is amazed by his first touch before spotting Mo. It was fortunate that we had this brilliant football play to end the game because of how wasteful we were at all the other times.”
Roberto De Zerbi, one of Liverpool’s next possible management prospects, was praised by Klopp for his team’s “incredible quality” as well. “Brighton have incredible quality,” he stated. I truly respect them, so that’s how I gauge how well we performed today.
“They had opportunities, they suddenly took more chances, and we started to feel a little worn out. We had a right to win the match. You want that, and it’s also extremely cool on top of that.”
According to Liverpool.com, there were three significant points in the title chase and a solid performance. Looking at the next five games between the championship contenders, Liverpool has a definite chance. The Reds play Sheffield United in the middle of the week before what could be the season’s most important matchup—against Manchester United.
The fact that the management gave Szoboszlai credit for his performance today is also a plus, as some of the abuse he received on social media was unjustified. With the exception of some poor finishing, which Salah will be trying to improve over the coming week after he scored his lone goal from a record-breaking 12 shots—not the kind of record the Egyptian king is looking to break—the Reds’ performance against the usually formidable Brighton team was title-winning!
