Liverpool star Mohamed Salah was on target with a fantastic effort for Egypt in his latest appearance for the national team but the forward has courted controversy once again
The Egyptian FA have responded to accusations Liverpool star Mo Salah REFUSED to be substituted in his latest game for his country.
The 31-year-old attacker played a full part over the recent series of internationals. The Pharaohs took against Burkina Faso and Guinea-Bissau in qualifying for the 2026 World Cup slated to take place in the USA.
Salah scored in the second game – a magnificent strike that secured a 1-1 draw. He was nevertheless thereafter mired in controversy.
Mostafa Fathi and Nasser Maher were set to come in on stoppage time but only the latter was substituted on. Some felt that Fathi was set to come on for Salah but he instead sat back down in the bench again.
An official statement has officially stated that Salah did not refuse to take off. It stated: “There is absolutely no truth to the reports that Mohamed Salah refused to leave the pitch. Salah was not going to be substituted off in the first place. Hossam Hassan was pleased with merely bringing on Nasser Maher.”
Salah has previously been involved in controversy for Egypt. Salah was kept out of the team in March as he battled to recover from a hamstring injury.
He had earlier made his return in a Europa League game against Sparta Prague, but was still left out of his country’s squad. Addressing the matter, EFA board member Walid El-Attar said: “There was communication between Liverpool, the EFA, and Mohamed Salah. There was also an exchange of formal documents in which Salah’s full injury situation was stated.
“The most critical aspect is official contact, which is exactly what occurred between Liverpool and the EFA. I had a phone call with Mohamed Salah.
“The main idea is that Salah should return to the pitch gradually, which is already occurring with Liverpool. He needs continuous monitoring with the medical staff.
“Salah will be gone from the forthcoming Egyptian national team camp, but he will be present during the international break in June, which is critical because we will be playing World Cup qualifiers at that time.
“Mohamed Salah is completely open to joining the Egyptian national squad at any time. Salah, on the contrary, enjoys representing Egypt. Everyone in the EFA and the Egyptian national team wants to promote the interests of the national team and Mohamed Salah.”
That incident came after Salah was forced to leave the Egypt camp early during the African Cup of Nations due to injury in January.

Liverpool ‘prioritise’ Michael Olise’s transfer after revising summer plans
Liverpool are once again linked with a bid for Crystal Palace’s Michael Olise, after apparently moving on from a previous transfer target.
The Reds have yet to announce any fresh acquisitions ahead of the start of the summer transfer window later this month. However, rumours regarding who players Liverpool could sign to enhance their team persist.
Arne Slot, who replaced Jurgen Klopp as Liverpool’s new head coach, is still in the early stages of his tenure. Slot will begin evaluating his squad during pre-season training next month, after which he and the players will travel to the United States for three friendlies.
Before then, Liverpool is expected to be linked with many more players as the summer transfer market progresses. Olise is one such player, with Manchester United, Chelsea, and Arsenal all reportedly interested in him in recent weeks.
