Liverpool’s efforts to secure new contracts

Liverpool’s efforts to secure new contracts for three of their key players might have recently become a bit more manageable.

Virgil van Dijk spoke to the Mirror about his future at Liverpool and with the Dutch national team. The 33-year-old seems eager to stay with both teams beyond 2025.

“At both teams I am still Virgil van Dijk, the big leader! And I certainly want to remain that for the next two years. I am human, I have emotions too. You start thinking all kinds of things. Especially just after a game like the elimination (by England) in the very last minute,” said the centre-back.

He added, “I also understand that it came across unclear on how I stood in all this, because after the match I was so disappointed and full of emotion. It perhaps came across as if it had been my last international match. I did have doubts that night and I did hint at that.”

Van Dijk continued, “It’s very good that I went on holiday the next day, was able to spend time with my children, my family, which is the most important thing in my life. I was able to share it and then very quickly things calmed down.”

Pundit Ally McCoist expressed his pleasure upon hearing the Reds captain’s update, saying, “Brilliant news. Delighted. Brilliant news. Brilliant news for everybody,” on TalkSPORT.

Van Dijk’s current contract, along with those of Mo Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold, is set to end in the summer of 2025.

In other news, Caoimhin Kelleher has openly expressed frustration about his situation at Liverpool.

The Republic of Ireland international recently reiterated his desire to be a No.1 goalkeeper elsewhere—a reasonable aspiration given his talent. While we agree that Kelleher deserves the chance to compete for a starting spot with another club, Liverpool is justified in demanding a fair price for him.

Jurgen Klopp has aptly referred to the Irishman as the world’s leading backup goalkeeper. Considering Kelleher’s 26 appearances in the 2023/24 season, Liverpool’s reluctance to accept a low offer from Nottingham Forest this summer is understandable.

The key question is when it will be most advantageous to sell the 25-year-old, whose contract runs until 2026. We anticipate that the next summer transfer window may be the final opportunity to secure a significant fee for him.
