Liverpool did not meet the anticipated

Liverpool did not meet the anticipated expectations during the summer transfer window.

Fans entered the off-season hoping for key moves to build on a solid final campaign under Jurgen Klopp. However, despite a pressing need for a new midfielder, Liverpool opted to sign only Federico Chiesa for a low fee and secured Giorgi Mamardashvili for a 2025 arrival.

Liverpool attempted to acquire Martin Zubimendi, but the Spaniard decided to stay at his boyhood club, Real Sociedad. With Sociedad facing a poor start to the season, speculation suggests Liverpool might revisit Zubimendi in 2025.

Next summer could be significant for the Reds, as they may pursue both Mamardashvili and potentially Zubimendi, along with Xavi Simons.

Regarding Simons, a transfer might not be particularly sensible for Liverpool, as he closely resembles Harvey Elliott in style. Nonetheless, journalist Yvonne Gabriel mentioned on the FC Bayern Insider podcast that Simons is on Liverpool’s radar and has impressed coach Arne Slot.

“Liverpool were also extremely keen on him this summer, there is a good connection to coach Arne Slot,” Gabriel noted, adding that the 21-year-old has a price-tag of around £67 million.

In his Daily Briefing, Fabrizio Romano clarified that no agreement has been reached with Liverpool for Simons, although he indicated that the player, currently on loan from PSG at RB Leipzig, is likely to move next summer.

“One of the players being considered around Europe in the summer was, for sure, Xavi Simons,” Romano stated. “He’s always been in the media and there have always been rumours.”

Romano emphasized that Leipzig was actively pursuing Simons, but he chose to remain in Germany to help the club compete for titles. “In summer 25 he will formally return to PSG but…top clubs will keep monitoring his progress at Leipzig,” he said. He added that while there’s a strong chance Simons could leave PSG permanently in 2025, no agreements are in place with Liverpool or any other club.

Liverpool needs to focus on other priorities instead of Simons

While Simons is undoubtedly a talented player with 130 senior appearances at just 21, he is strikingly similar to Elliott.

Both players are small, skillful, and packed with talent, leaving little room for both in the same squad, especially at the rumored fee. With Liverpool needing a top defensive midfielder and a new center-back, pursuing Simons should not be a priority.
