Does Trent Alexander-Arnold rejoin the Liverpool team right away? Our authors share their opinions.
Trent Alexander-Arnold is expected to return for Liverpool’s Premier League match against Brighton at Anfield on March 31.
Since sustaining a recurrence of a knee injury during Liverpool’s 3-1 victory over Burnley at Anfield in early February, the vice captain of the Reds has remained out. When the issue resurfaced at halftime, Alexander-Arnold had to be replaced. He had already been sidelined by the issue for three weeks.
Although his comeback will provide Liverpool a lift, it will also present Jurgen Klopp with a dilemma because Conor Bradley, Joe Gomez, and a trio of players in the midfield are all playing well.
The following is the opinion of our ECHO panel regarding Alexander-Arnold’s future use:
Paul Gorst: Bradley has performed admirably, but Alexander-Arnold quality could be the deciding factor.
Conor Bradley deserves praise for seizing the opportunity presented by Trent Alexander-Arnold.
Bradley has really stepped up to the plate over the bulk of 2024, despite the West Derby-born defender being in and out of the team.
If the next manager recognises what has been clear since the Northern Ireland international was thrown into the team due to Alexander-Arnold’s injury, then there won’t be many concerns when he is involved in the senior group going ahead.
Having said that, Alexander-Arnold’s impending return will be crucial for the Reds as they aim to significantly upend the Premier League title fight in the remaining ten games.
While there will always be debate about Alexander-Arnold’s long-term status, his return to his hybrid role will instill confidence in everyone associated with the club. A healthy and prepared Alexander-Arnold will open up defences.
The England international’s estimated return date is the Brighton match on March 31, and just think of how much his inventiveness will help the cause in the last two months.
Joe Rimmer: Klopp’s response is quite basic.
Trent Alexander-Arnold presents a selection conundrum for Jurgen Klopp, but the solution is obvious: start him again.
The fact that Trent is so excellent is sometimes forgotten, or conveniently ignored, but his significance to Liverpool is undeniable. The first knee injury happened as he was just getting settled in, and let’s not forget that it was his impact that sparked Liverpool’s turnaround in the same month last year.
While Joe Gomez is a solid defensive alternative and Conor Bradley has shown promise, Trent offers Liverpool a totally different threat and may even prove to be a hidden weapon in the Premier League final stretch.
Liverpool needs to make the most of this exceptional talent in order to close the season as strongly as possible.
