Liverpool’s 80th-minute goal against Manchester City in the Premier League gave them a point, but Jamie Carragher wasn’t pleased with one player’s performance.

Jamie Carragher thinks Liverpool was lucky to draw with Manchester City when the home team’s goal was disallowed due to an Alisson foul.

At the Etihad Stadium on Saturday, Trent Alexander-Arnold’s goal in the 80th minute offset Erling Haaland’s poor finish, giving Liverpool a 1-1 draw. They are the first side in 24 games to stop a City home victory in 2023, but the outcome needed some luck.

After Manuel Akanji was found to have fouled Alisson, Ruben Dias’ goal from a corner was disallowed in the second half. When the Liverpool goalie stumbled after being jumped by the City defender, Dias was able to tap into an empty net.

“Liverpool and Alisson are really fortunate in my opinion,” Carragher stated on Sky Sports. “There is just no chance in the world that if the referee calls such a goal, VAR will call it a foul. For a goalie of his calibre, very little is affecting him.

It’s simply like a centre back and a centre forward lunging forward to challenge a header. It serves as a balance. It kind of reminds me of the Newcastle-Arsenal match, where there was a 50/50 debate about whether Gabriel committed a foul, but the fact that the referee decided not to call it meant it would never stand. From a Liverpool perspective, I believe that’s something I want my goalie to handle.

Alisson had a challenging game for Liverpool; after another clumsy pass gave Phil Foden a fantastic opportunity, his scuffed kick resulted in Haaland’s first goal. Carragher chastised the Liverpool goalie despite the excellent low save he made from Foden to keep his team from trailing 2-0 at the break.

“I guarantee that any goalie, who is among the top two or three in the world or at least in my opinion, will be disappointed with his performance today,” he continued. “I don’t think he was at all; we saw in the build-up to the first goal that he battled at times with the ball at his feet, but he should be doing better for a custodian of his calibre. When you consider both of today’s goals, they were nearly touch before being shot, giving the goalkeepers little opportunity to adjust.

But Carragher did commend Liverpool’s performance as a whole. “If it had been the City of last season, they would have lost that game,” he stated. But, something is developing there, and from what Trent said at the time, it sounded like Jurgen Klopp told the players to “go for it lads” at halftime, even though they were behind 1-0. When the second half began, they increased their pressure and seemed to be hoping to salvage something from the game. I didn’t think either team played well enough, and after seeing the game, I didn’t think either side deserved to win.
