Liverpool transfers: How the Reds could line up in 2023/24
After the highs of 2021/22, which almost culminated in a historic quadrupling, Liverpool had a miserable 2022/23 season, although a strong end to the season has brought a touch of optimism heading into the summer.

Jurgen Klopp’s men rallied to finish fifth and will compete in the Europa League after many tipped them for another title.

The club has a number of key focus areas this summer, with midfield being the overwhelming priority.

Klopp will not want to endure another season like 2022/23 and the Reds are expected to be very busy in the market.
This is how Liverpool could line up for the 2023/24 season.

How Liverpool could line up in 2023/24

The best goalkeeper in the Premier League was, without question, Liverpool’s star man last season. His place between the sticks couldn’t be more secure heading into 2023/24.

RB: Trent Alexander-Arnold
– The revolutionary right-back’s productive end to the season coincided with a role change which facilitated his advancement into midfield areas.

His performances for England in June only bolstered the notion that his future may lie further up the pitch, and we’ll surely see him in a more metronomic role come the start of next season.

CB: Virgil van Dijk – The Dutchman may no longer boast the imperious aura of his apex and he certainly wasn’t at his best in 2022/23. However, whether last season was just an outlier or the beginning of Van Dijk’s decline remains to be seen.

CB: Ibrahima Konate – It could be argued strongly that Konate is Liverpool’s best centre-back at the moment. For example, the Reds were hampered by his injury problems last season.

The club are expected to test the centre-back waters this summer and have been linked with Wolsburg’s Micky van de Ven, but Van Dijk and Konate should be the partnership of choice.

LB: Andy Robertson – The ever-reliable Robertson was a shining spark for the Reds during their difficult 2022-23 season and his status as Liverpool’s starting left-back is unquestioned.

DM: Fabinho – The Brazilian’s time at the club looked set to come to an end for much of 2022/23, but Klopp’s change of structure to move Trent into midfield helped Fabinho finish the season well.

Liverpool could make three additions to their engine room this summer but Klopp will certainly want a touch of familiarity.

CM: Khephren Thuram – One of those Thuram players, who can operate at the base of midfield and in a more entrepreneurial box-to-box role.

The Reds have been continuously linked with the transfer of the Nice midfielder but the deal isn’t expected to be finalized until after the European Under-21 Championship.

Nicolo Barella, Federico Valverde and Aurelien Tchouameni are other names on the club’s radar, but Thuram looks set to conclude the simplest and most realistic deal.

CM: Alexis Mac Allister – The world champion was Liverpool’s first signing this summer and will become a cornerstone for Klopp’s Reds next season.

The action-packed Argentine could play a similar role to Georginio Wijnaldum at Anfield.

RW: Mohamed Salah
– Salah expressed his frustration after Liverpool finished the 2022/23 season in fifth place, writing on Twitter that he was “completely devastated”.

The post sparked rumors of a possible exit with Saudi clubs who have recently been linked. However, Salah is expected to stay on Merseyside and help the club have a successful year.

ST: Cody Gakpo – Replacing Roberto Firmino won’t be an easy task but Gakpo, who joined the club in January, has impressed across the board and is set to take over from the Brazilian.

The Dutchman, who finished the season with seven Premier League goals, will have a similar role to Firmino at Anfield.

AG: Luis Diaz – The winger’s impact on the club was felt right in the middle of Liverpool’s majestic 2021/22 season and his long-term absence was clearly felt last season.

A knee injury ruled Diaz out for six months, but he returned before the end of the season and started four consecutive league games.

Although it may take longer for Diaz to get back to his best, he is expected to move ahead of Darwin Nunez on the depth chart by the start of next season.
