“I turned down a transfer to Liverpool ten years ago, but I might be one of Arne Slot’s first acquisitions” this summer.

This summer, Liverpool might be searching for a new backup goalkeeper. Alex McCarthy, a stopper for Southampton, is one of the names reportedly drawing attention.
This summer, Liverpool may make significant adjustments to its goalkeeping staff. Saudi Arabia is reportedly interested in Alisson, Caoimhín Kelleher’s future is also uncertain, and Adrián is considering returning to Spain when his contract expires.
Alisson is unlikely to pique Kelleher’s curiosity, but he might move on. Nottingham Forest was reportedly interested in the Republic of Ireland international in January (BBC Sport), but Liverpool resisted and wouldn’t let him leave.
After Alisson pulled up with a hamstring injury, the 25-year-old was enjoying his longest stint in the starting lineup. However, since being healthy again, the Reds’ number one has reclaimed his spot, and there’s a sense that Kelleher might try to establish himself as the starting lineup somewhere this summer.
The Daily Mail claims that Alex McCarthy, the goalkeeper for Southampton, is one of the keepers that Liverpool is already considering as a successor. After Gavin Bazunu’s injury, McCarthy, 34, who had been the backup for the majority of the season, has reclaimed his spot.
The fact that the former England international’s contract expires at the end of the current campaign has apparently informed Liverpool and Newcastle, and Celtic is keeping an eye on the matter as well. McCarthy has previously been connected to a transfer to Anfield.
The goalkeeper was someone Brendan Rodgers had worked with at Reading, and Rodgers wanted to bring him to Liverpool to face Simon Mignolet. But after talking with manager Harry Redknapp, he decided to sign for QPR instead.
Talking to the Mine, Yours, Far Away! In a podcast from 2022, McCarthy stated: “Harry Redknapp called me just as I was ready to board the train to Liverpool. I was aware that I wouldn’t be playing every game at Liverpool, and Harry had mentioned that there would be more chances at QPR.
“Collaborating with Harry at QPR or Brendan at Liverpool. My dad and my agent were there at the train station talking to me endlessly about it. Since I was playing at Reading, I wanted to continue playing, so I signed with QPR. “I firmly think that everything occurs for a purpose.
It took me some time to break into the squad, and once I did, I was forced to withdraw from the match against Liverpool due to a quad strain. After we were demoted, I spent a season there before moving to Crystal Palace.”
McCarthy only played for Selhurst Park for a single season before moving to Southampton in 2016. In 2018, he played in one friendly match for England against the USA.
According to Liverpool.com, McCarthy decided against joining Liverpool in 2014 because he wanted to play and was probably only going to be Simon Mignolet’s backup. At this point in his career, that role will certainly appeal to him more, and if Kelleher and Adrián leave, his experience would be welcome back next season.
