In the 3-1 draw with Aston Villa, Jurgen Klopp holds one player responsible for Liverpool's loss.

In the match against Aston Villa, Jurgen Klopp was fired after his team lost a 3-1 lead.

After the Reds had taken a 3-1 lead, Jurgen Klopp called out the “mistake” made by Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk, which allowed Aston Villa to mount a stunning comeback. Emiliano Martinez made a mistake that resulted in an own goal early on in a thrilling evening at Villa Park. Youri Tielemans pulled one back, but Cody Gakpo’s tap-in and Jarrell Quansah’s header had the visitors comfortably up.

But with five minutes remaining, things went wrong for Klopp’s team. When Van Dijk collected the ball in his own territory, there was not much indication of danger. However, the Dutchman then unnecessarily put Alexis Mac Allister under pressure by passing into the Argentinian with his back to goal.

He became troublesome and Callum Chambers duly dispossessed him, allowing Jhon Duran to finish with a low shot from the edge of the area. The same man made it 3-3 two minutes later by deflecting Moussa Diaby’s ball and leaving Alisson alone in the Liverpool goal.

After Klopp made four substitutions at the 75-minute mark, there was a late turmoil. However, the German manager said that the changes were required and cited Van Dijk’s mistake. “We gave them too many chances before we changed,” he said to Sky Sports. “The boys found it to be really intense.

They produced an excessive amount. We changed them since they were in our box far too frequently. Then something went wrong. It was improper of us to pass the ball to Mac Allister there. It occurs, but right then and there, the door is opened.”

The 56-year-old acknowledged that he was happy with the performance despite the late surrender, but he also acknowledged that his team had trouble after Dhuran had cut the gap. “The character from the boys tonight was outstanding in our situation,” he stated.

“We were hoping to win the match. When we handed up the 3-2, that was incredibly difficult at the time. That concludes the game’s narrative.”

But Klopp was relieved for one reason when he left Villa Park. He was only one caution away from a touchline ban at the start of the evening, and a yellow card would have forced him to watch his final Anfield match on Sunday from the stands.

Rather, he will now have a spectacular farewell when Liverpool plays Wolves. His team is guaranteed third place going into the final game of his eight and a half-year tenure, which is sure to be an emotionally charged occasion.
