Jurgen Klopp is now focused on a “very impressive” target he had in mind in 2020
There could be a move to Anfield in January
Liverpool appear to be targeting a familiar target Jurgen Klopp was eyeing just over three years ago when January arrived, according to a new report.
Are there any January additions at Liverpool?
The Reds had a good summer transfer window overall, although some fans still felt they needed a new centre-back, as well as another defensive midfielder, rather than just Wataru Endo in that role.
There’s still no denying that Liverpool have undergone an exciting rebuild in the middle of the park, with five players moving on and Alexis Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai and Ryan Gravenberch all arriving.
It’s been a great start to the season for the Merseysiders, who have taken ten points from four tough Premier League games, excluding Bournemouth at home, and there is positivity in the air.
But that doesn’t mean the club won’t look to make new additions at the start of the January transfer window, particularly in defense if Ibrahima Konate, Joel Matip and Joe Gomez continue to be unreliable due to injuries in that department.
Who are Liverpool linked with?
According to Football Insider, the Reds are now set to sign Bournemouth centre-back Lloyd Kelly in January, having previously considered a move for the defender in the summer of 2020:
“Bournemouth defender Lloyd Kelly could be available for a reduced fee in January while Liverpool are ready to secure his services, sources have told Football Insider.
The Merseysiders could be joined by Tottenham in the race for the 24-year-old – who are also keen to sign him.
“Kelly is no longer contracted to Bournemouth in June 2024 and can therefore negotiate a pre-contractual agreement with foreign clubs in January.” But Premier League duo Liverpool and Tottenham are ready to fight to keep him in England and ensure Bournemouth receive a return for the centre-back.”
Kelly could be exactly what Liverpool are looking for as their new centre-back signing.
He has been a highly regarded player for several years and can play a hybrid role between the center and left back positions.
The Englishman, now 24, has done well at Bournemouth since arriving from Bristol City in 2019.
He has made 119 appearances for the Cherries, scoring twice and recording seven assists in that time.
Last season he played 23 games in the Premier League, helping his team escape the relegation zone.
Kelly has also won nine and ten caps in the past for England Under-20s and Under-21s respectively, underlining his international pedigree, and former Bournemouth manager Gary O’Neil said he has the potential to become a great defender earlier this year.
state, and also called it “very, very impressive.”
The centre-back could come in and provide strong competition to the likes of Matip and Gomez, likely jumping ahead of them in the pecking order from the start, and given his age he could also be seen as someone who could help replace the 32-year-old midfielder.
One-year Virgil van Dijk should continue to improve and reach his potential over time, even if the Liverpool captain is going nowhere at the moment.

Liverpool plan to sign £42.2m star late – report
Liverpool have already agreed a deal to sign Ryan Gravenberch from Bayern Munich and are said to be considering poaching Leroy Sane from Bayern first.
The Reds have rejected a mammoth offer worth £150m to sell Mohamed Salah.
However, Sky’s Paul Merson believes the Al-Ittihad threat is not over and a £200million offer would be too big to turn down.
There would be no point in selling arguably the best player when there are only a few hours left in the summer transfer window because it will be difficult to replace him.
However, the Reds are said to be looking for ways to replace the Egyptian and Leroy Sane’s name would be in the spotlight.
According to an exclusive report from Football Insider, Liverpool are considering a late signing of the Germany international who shone for Manchester City in the Premier League.
The news source mentioned that the Anfield club are looking for a replacement for Salah and are keeping a close eye on 27-year-old Kaiser.
Sane won every major domestic league title with Sky Blues, including two Premier League titles, under manager Pep Guardiola.
Moreover, the 53-time national player has already won three Bundesliga titles since joining the Allianz Arena.
The quick and tricky winger contributed 24 goals for Bayern last season and has already netted twice in three appearances this term.
Almost two weeks ago, Football Transfers spoke about Liverpool’s interest in Leroy Sane, saying his expected transfer value was around £42.2m (€49.3m).
