After a compensation agreement worth up to £9.4 million was reached with Feyenoord, Arne Slot is expected to take over as manager of Liverpool.
Jurgen Klopp, who declared in January that he will leave Anfield at the conclusion of the 2023–24 season, is expected to be succeeded by the Dutchman.
Before he is formally named, the 45-year-old’s contract will now be negotiated by the Reds.
Liverpool has agreed to provide Feyenoord £7.7 million (9 million euros) in addition to an additional £1.7 million (2 million euros).
Feyenoord won the Dutch Cup this season and is predicted to finish second in their league under Slot’s leadership, and they also won the 2022–23 Eredivisie title.
The aggressive tactics of Slot’s teams, his character, and his capacity for player development are thought to have played a major role in Liverpool selecting him for the position.
After taking over as Feyenoord’s manager in 2021, Slot indicated in 2023 that he was interested in managing in the Premier League after being connected to Tottenham.
Xabi Alonso, a former midfielder for Liverpool, led Bayer Leverkusen to their first Bundesliga championship this year and was connected to the Anfield job.
However, the 42-year-old Spaniard put a stop to rumours in March when he declared he would stay at Leverkusen for the foreseeable future.
Ruben Amorim of Sporting Lisbon was reportedly said to have been a candidate to succeed Klopp, who has led the Reds since October 2015.
At a press conference on Friday, Klopp, who was not involved in the hiring process for his replacement, stated that there is plenty to respect about the way Slot’s teams play the game.
“I enjoy watching his football team play. According to what I’ve heard about him, he’s a good man,” Klopp remarked.
“Good guy, good coach, and looking forward for the club if he is the solution—I really appreciate it. It sounds extremely wonderful, so I’m overjoyed.”
When asked what position Slot would hold if hired, Klopp responded, “Best job in the world, best club in the world.” Now that [Liverpool] isn’t finishing on a high note, it appears that [Slot is] aided, suggesting room for growth.”
Slot’s journey to Liverpool
Having played as a midfielder in the past, Slot completed his playing career in the Netherlands, appearing in over 100 games for FC Zwolle and NAC Breda.
He started his coaching career at PEC Zwolle as a youth coach after he retired from playing, and then he went on to SC Cambuur to become an assistant manager.
After relocating to AZ Alkmaar in 2017, he advanced to the position of manager after two years. They were tied for second place with Ajax, the league leaders, at the end of his first season in charge because to the Covid-19 pandemic.
When it was alleged that he had been in talks with Feyenoord, he was fired in December 2020.
With an ESPN interview on Thursday, Slot declared his desire to relocate to Liverpool: “It seems clear to me that I would like to work there.”
