Before the match against Burnley, Jürgen Klopp receives a serious blow to Dominik Szoboszlai, and other players appear to be sidelined.
Sunday saw Liverpool’s first loss of 2024 as Arsenal won all three points in a crucial Premier League title match. The Reds are still atop the standings, but their lead is narrowing as Manchester City and Arsenal are only two points behind.
Next Saturday, Jürgen Klopp’s team will be keen to defeat Burnley led by Vincent Kompany and resume their winning ways. But for the time being, everyone’s focus will be on Manchester City’s Monday Night Football matchup versus Brentford.
Defensor Ibrahima Konaté is the most recent player to be added to Liverpool’s roster of absences for the match against the Clarets. The French player, who was given his second yellow card of the day in North London, will be sidelined for Saturday’s match at Anfield.
The return of Andy Robertson and Trent Alexander-Arnold lessens the impact of his suspension, while Joe Gomez, the defender, will probably move back into the centre of defence after playing full-back in recent weeks. Numerous players are still dealing with ailments in other areas, as Liverpool.com has detailed below.
Dominik Szoboszlai
The midfielder from Hungary was not present for the most recent match against Arsenal, having only recently recovered from a hamstring injury that had kept him out of action for four games in January. Speaking prior to the match at the Emirates Stadium, Klopp stated: “Dom felt pretty much in the same place as where he was injured the last time.”
“He wasn’t participating in the game; he was fine. However, following the game, he experienced some discomfort, so we looked into it and decided that he couldn’t play this game anymore. We are unable to take any chances. It was evident that he couldn’t be involved today, but we will have to wait for additional evaluation. That’s pretty much it.
Mohamed Salah
Liverpool hasn’t had its lucky strike since defeating Newcastle United on January 1. Salah injured his hamstring in an Africa Cup of Nations match between Egypt and Ghana, after having already left for international duty with his country.
Although the situation is more serious than initially thought, the player has been seen sprinting on the practice pitch, and everyone connected to the team is hoping for a speedy recovery. He won’t have to return to the Ivory Coast because Egypt has already qualified out of the AFCON.
Stefan Bajčetić
with March 2023, the youthful midfield player was injured and out of the game for the rest of the season following a fantastic rookie campaign with the first team. After that, he returned in September to play in the Carabao Cup and Europa League, but he has since developed a calf problem.
Given that Klopp has stated they are willing to proceed cautiously with his return in order to avoid future injuries, he is anticipated to resume training during the month of February. There’s no rush, particularly since Thiago has returned.
Joël Matip
Matip is expected to be out of action until the conclusion of his Anfield contract this summer after sustaining an anterior cruciate ligament damage back in December. Since then, he has had surgery to address the problem, and he is currently at the AXA Training Centre going through a protracted recovery process. This could be the Cameroonian’s last game because his contract expires at the conclusion of the season.
Kostas Tsimikas
Following Andy Robertson’s injury during an international match, the Greek full-back seemed destined for a significant stint in the starting lineup. But after injuring his collarbone against Arsenal in December, this was cut short.
After Klopp disclosed that they are only awaiting the all-clear on Tsimikas’ recuperation, the player is getting closer to joining the matchday roster. “Kosti is near. Kosti is truly in good shape,” he declared at the end of January. “Kosti merely needs to wait for the all-clear now since bone mending takes a lot longer, but for now, the plate is working fine.
“To put it that way, we now need to determine when one is taking over enough. In addition, he is undergoing training. He did not stay out for as long as Trent or Dom did.”
Ben Doak
Doak was hurt badly in his knee while playing for the U21s. Later, assistant manager Pep Lijnders revealed that he had ruptured his lateral meniscus and that surgery was necessary to repair the damage. “He is a young, fit guy,” Lijnders remarked in December.
He is a positive man, so we can be sure he will return stronger. We also need him to return with the same intensity and passion he did when he was with the ball. We’ll wait for him even if he needs some time.” It’s uncertain exactly when we can expect him back.
