Liverpool is expected to sign a shocking Man City player who will help an underutilized star take over Anfield.
According to reports, Liverpool has been urged to raid Manchester City for a player Pep Guardiola secretly hopes will leave the team.
If they succeed, it would free up a Reds star to completely dominate Anfield.
In order to replace the large number of players who left, Liverpool completely revamped their midfield over the summer by signing four new stars.
James Milner (Brighton), Naby Keita (Werder Bremen), and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain (Besiktas) all left as free agents.
The burgeoning Saudi Pro League was able to entice Jordan Henderson and Fabinho.
Fabio Carvalho joined RB Leipzig on loan while Arthur Melo’s option to buy out his loan was declined. Youngsters Leighton Clarkson (Aberdeen) and Tyler Morton (Hull City – loan) also made room.
However, only Wataru Endo—possibly the least well-known of the group—is a specialized holding midfielder among Liverpool’s new foursome (Szoboszlai, Mac Allister, Gravenberch, Endo).
Because of this, Alexis Mac Allister has frequently been fielded by Jurgen Klopp in the deeper role this season.
Although it cannot be argued that the task is putting constraints on Mac Allister’s game, he has dutifully accepted it.
In a more advanced position on the left side of midfield for Argentina during the World Cup, Mac Allister flourished.
It would be intriguing to use Mac Allister in that manner at Liverpool while Dominik Szoboszlai makes raids down the right.
But before Klopp can unleash Mac Allister, he must either have faith in Endo or bring in a fresh face at the base of the midfield.
In light of this, it seems like a chance involving Man City is emerging.
In fact, according to a recent report from Football Transfers, Kalvin Phillips received permission from Man City to leave the team over the summer.
Despite Pep Guardiola reportedly “hoping” for an exit, none occurred.
Since moving from Leeds United to the Etihad in 2022, Phillips’ tenure there has been, to put it mildly, disappointing.
His biggest challenge may be Rodri, who is arguably the best holding midfielder in football right now.
The talkSPORT duo of Andy Goldstein and Darren Bent now advocated for Liverpool to intervene and save Phillips when speculating about his future.
‘Disciplined’ Phillips can unlock true Mac Allister potential
The first question Goldstein posed to his co-host was, “Do you think that if Kalvin Phillips went to Liverpool to make up that midfield, they would be a much better team because then you’re allowing players like Mac Allister to have free reign?”
Bent answered, “Yeah, possibly.
“Because I believe Kalvin Phillips has the self-control to simply sit there and understand his role.
When questioned specifically about whether adding Phillips makes Liverpool better, Bent responded, “Yeah, because he’s a good player.
They won’t become weaker because of him.
Due to Mac Allister assuming his more natural position, it makes them stronger.
Liverpool clearly has money to burn in 2024 if their late-summer £110 million bid for Moises Caicedo is any indication.
When Chelsea snatched up Caicedo, the Reds went on to sign Ryan Gravenberch, even though the Dutchman was much more affordable at £34m.
Liverpool does seem to have a need for a holding midfielder, and Phillips appears to be free to leave City.
A completely different question is whether Guardiola would sell to their biggest rival of the previous five years.
