The latest on Liverpool’s search for a new center-back as the Reds look to bolster their roster ahead of the 2019–2020 season.
As Jurgen Klopp keeps looking for new midfield superstars, Liverpool has been linked to yet another summer signing that would be a major splash. The Reds made it clear after signing Alexis MacAllister that they weren’t quite done updating their engine room, and many players have been strongly linked with moves to Anfield.
One of the most recent names to be mentioned is Federico Valverde, and according to Spanish media, as relayed by Football 365, the Reds have elbowed their way in front of Chelsea and Manchester City. According to reports, Liverpool is now in the lead in the race to sign the Real Madrid star and is “ready to pay” the high asking price of €90 million (£76.9 million).
Liverpool was anticipated to spend lavishly on bolstering their weakest area after announcing they would be adding more than one midfielder this summer. The fact that they lost interest in Jude Bellingham because of his nine-figure price tag, however, had somewhat eliminated individual big money moves.
It’s interesting that Bellingham joined Madrid earlier this month from Borussia Dortmund despite the fact that they didn’t sign him. After announcing the signing of the Englishman and the departure of Karim Benzema, who joined Al-Ittihad of Saudi Arabia, Los Blancos is expected to make additional significant transfer announcements.
According to reports, Valverde is leaning more toward sticking with the Spanish powerhouse club despite having a contract with Madrid that doesn’t expire until 2027. The 12-goal, seven-assist player from Uruguay started both of his team’s Champions League matches against Liverpool to help the six-time champions be eliminated. He had a productive season overall last year, scoring 12 goals and providing seven assists.
Despite being tipped as the favorites to sign Valverde, Chelsea is once more searching for new players, and Man City will also be looking to replace lkay Gündoan after reaching an agreement with Barcelona following the expiration of his contract.

Liverpool’s plan to steal Tottenham’s move for £60m Bundesliga player; Man Utd, Newcastle are also interested
Liverpool have reportedly “asked to be kept informed” about the future of Tottenham-linked Bayer Leverkusen centre-back Edmond Tapsoba.
The 24-year-old striker has been linked for two years with a move to the Premier League. Now it seems that he can finally move.
It’s no secret that Jurgen Klopp wants to strengthen his defense next season. Indeed, the recent performances of Joel Matip and Joe Gomez have caused the manager to scan the market for defenders. For example, Liverpool have been “in talks” with Bayern Munich star Benjamin Pavard.
The French international can play at right-back or centre-back and is keen to join a Premier League club this summer.
However, the Reds have yet to make a concrete offer for Pavard. Then they could potentially turn their attention to Tapsoba.
As mentioned, Tottenham Hotspur also have the Burkina Faso national team on their radar. Ange Postecoglou wants to sign two centre-backs this summer, with Tapsoba believed to be his main target.
However, he won’t come cheap as Bayer Leverkusen have reportedly given him a valuation of £60million.
Tottenham ‘cautious’ about Liverpool interest in Tapsoba
According to 90Min, Tottenham are ‘cautious’ ahead of their move as Tapsoba could be kidnapped.
The report claims that one of the clubs who could potentially opt for the defender is Liverpool. Manchester United and Newcastle have also been “informed of Tapsoba’s situation”.
With that in mind, Tapsoba’s move to Tottenham is far from over, although he is ‘ready’ to join them this summer. Clement Lenglet is unlikely to be brought back on board at Spurs after a mixed spell on loan from Barcelona. Elsewhere, Postecoglou will reportedly be hearing offers for Eric Dier, Davinson Sanchez and Ben Davies.
Tapsoba made 47 appearances in all competitions for Bayer Leverkusen last season. In doing so, he helped his team to 13 clean sheets and scored two goals.
He is a versatile player and can play as both a defensive midfielder and central defender. This allows him to provide coverage in multiple positions.
With that in mind, it will be interesting to see if Liverpool make a concrete offer for Tapsoba. If they do, Tottenham will only fear more that their deal could fall through.
