Liverpool keen on signing ‘dangerous’ £25m midfielder also targeted by Manchester City

The January transfer window is quickly approaching for Liverpool, and one area the Reds are expected to invest heavily in is central midfield.

Liverpool spent a significant part of the summer transfer window pursuing Real Sociedad’s Martin Zubimendi, who ultimately chose to remain with the Basque club despite the opportunity to join Liverpool.

With Zubimendi now sidelined with an injury, a January move to Liverpool appears unlikely. Additionally, Dutch coach Arne Slot is reportedly looking to strengthen three other positions during the winter window.

Liverpool have also entered the race alongside Manchester City to sign one of Serie A’s most promising talents.

Samuele Ricci of Torino FC has been linked with a move, with the 23-year-old Italy international having an impressive season with the Serie A club.

According to L’Interista, Liverpool is among the top clubs showing interest in Ricci, who has caught the eye of many for his stellar performances this season. Described by Total Football Analysis as a “dangerous” passer, Ricci is seen as an alternative to Zubimendi, with a transfer fee believed to be set at €30m (£25m) for the January window.

Liverpool’s need for central midfield reinforcements is pressing, given their limited high-quality options. However, Ryan Gravenberch’s development has alleviated some of the urgency that was felt earlier in the summer.

Ricci could be an excellent addition for Liverpool, offering versatility in the midfield. Torino’s asking price seems to be within reach for the Reds, making him a realistic target in January.

What would Ricci offer Liverpool if signed in January?

Ricci has been one of the standout midfielders in Serie A this season. The former Empoli player has established himself as a regular for Italy and is now drawing significant attention from clubs like Liverpool and City.

If Liverpool were to secure Ricci’s services, the 23-year-old would provide something Liverpool’s current midfield lacks: a player who can seamlessly transition between different roles in the midfield depending on the situation.

Primarily a no. 6 but also capable of playing as a no. 8 for Torino, Ricci’s tactical adaptability and ability to adjust during matches would make him a valuable asset for Liverpool. If the Reds can secure his signature, he could be a perfect fit at Anfield.
