Liverpool makes a formal club announcement confirming the addition to Jurgen Klopp’s squad.

Rhys Williams has been called back by Liverpool from his loan at Aberdeen. The news was announced on the Reds’ official website and social media pages this morning.

After a brief stint in Scotland that was supposed to last the entire season but was suddenly shortened by his parent club, the defender is back at Anfield.

Joe Gomez had to play left-back when Kostas Tsimikas and Andy Robertson were out, and Joel Matip’s cruciate ligament injury limited Klopp’s options at centre back. The 22-year-old’s return improves those possibilities.

Williams didn’t play a senior role for Aberdeen, so even if Liverpool had all of their defenders available, they might have been thinking about calling him back (Transfermarkt).

Nobody benefited from the loan, and while his lack of playing time in Scotland means he will be at most a supporting role for the Reds, at least he adds some depth to Klopp’s center-back corps.

With a lot of injuries to deal with following a demanding pre-Christmas and holiday schedule, the manager is probably going to rotate his team a lot for the FA Cup and Carabao Cup matches against Arsenal and Fulham next week.

Williams is no stranger to rising to the occasion in the midst of a long list of casualties at Liverpool; three years ago, he famously did so alongside the similarly green Nat Phillips to help the Reds salvage a third-place finish from a challenging season.

He may be loaned out once more before the end of the month, so it’s highly likely that his return to Anfield will be temporary, but for the time being at least, he provides Klopp with another center-back option.

On Boxing Day, Wataru Endo made history by starting for Liverpool against Burnley, a feat not witnessed at the club in eighteen years. All of Jurgen Klopp’s faith lies in the Japanese international.

Liverpool hasn’t played a game in thirteen days, as Michael Reid noted on Twitter. Since January 2006, no player has been able to replicate Endo’s feat of having started every single one.

Rotation was less popular back then than it is today. Consequently, a number of players—Steven Finnan, Jamie Carragher, Sami Hyypia, Steven Gerrard, Harry Kewell, and Peter Crouch—started five games in a span of thirteen days.

But since managers started to limit the amount of games players started, nobody has done it. Endo was unusual back then, and he didn’t really need to start the game.

Endo’s time at Liverpool got off to a rough start. In fact, he seemed out of his element in some of his early games, which were just plain awful.

But because Jurgen Klopp persisted in starting him, the holding midfielder is currently the most reliable member of the starting lineup. Naturally, part of that is that, with Stefan Bajcetic and Alexis Mac Allister still sidelined due to injuries, Endo is the only holding midfielder on the team.

However, it also demonstrates how much Klopp believes in the player. Endo was genuinely one yellow card away from punishment going into the Burnley match. The manager played him for the entire ninety minutes, not only when he got off to a good start.
