Liverpool may get one of the largest payments in football history for the transfer of Dominic Solanke

A provision added to Liverpool’s 2019 contract to transfer Dominic Solanke to Bournemouth may bring in around £10 million should the player sign with rivals Tottenham.

Ange Postecoglou told football.london that he would like a “out and out No. 9” who “fits the mould” physically and technically, confirming the reports that Solanke is a target for Tottenham.

The striker’s contract contains a £65 million release clause that “can only be activated by certain clubs,” according to The Athletic.

Even while the clubs’ identities are still unknown, it seems sense that they would be England’s best teams, with Tottenham being one of the well-known “big six” teams.

Liverpool committed to a sell-on clause that would have entitled them to 20 percent of any future profit when they transferred Solanke to Bournemouth five and a half years ago.

A fifth of the remaining £46 million would be awarded to any team that activates his release clause this summer, having already collected roughly £19 million from their original contract with Bournemouth.

Liverpool would therefore be entitled to £9.2 million of that profit if Tottenham were to spend the £65 million necessary to sign Solanke.

Although there are rumours that Chelsea made as much as £18 million when Tino Livramento moved from Southampton to Newcastle last summer, that would still rank among the highest sell-on prices in football history.

During this transfer window, Liverpool has already made two further acquisitions of former players, totalling £4.8 million.

They received £2.5 million for Luis Alberto’s transfer from Lazio to Al-Duhail SC in Qatar, while the Reds received £2.3 million for Kamil Grabara’s successful completion of his transfer from Copenhagen to Wolfsburg.

Viktor Gyokeres of Sporting CP and Jonathan David of Lille are also being considered by Tottenham, but Solanke, the former Liverpool striker, is the most compelling option.

Therefore, it was noteworthy that the 26-year-old was left off of the team for Bournemouth’s latest preseason friendly, a 1-0 victory over Rayo Vallecano on Sunday.

However, manager Andoni Iraola stated in an interview with Sky Sports that his absence—he chose to watch from the stands instead—was the result of a minor ailment and had nothing to do with any romantic desire.

That hasn’t stopped rumours, though, and if Solanke does decide to transfer teams this summer, Liverpool will profit handsomely.
