Liverpool set to secure low-risk $38m transfer after Wataru Endo presents perfect fit for Jurgen Klopp
Liverpool are still looking for another midfielder before the transfer window closes and Nottingham Forest have shown Jurgen Klopp to be an ideal transfer target.
Liverpool finally made progress this week after securing a transfer from Wataru Endo, following a period when it sometimes looked like the Reds could abuse any transfer from Chelsea.
Endo’s arrival restores a key missing element in midfield, but after Jurgen Klopp had to leave Jordan Henderson and Fabinho in the summer, Liverpool’s deal in the transfer market is not over.
FSG’s $140m (£110m/€129m) bid for Brighton’s Moisés Caicedo is a promising sign that there are still funds in the transfer pot. However, with fewer options on the market that would command such high fees, Liverpool may have to continue to be smart about their signings as Klopp looks to round out his squad ahead of a possible Premier League title fight.
Monaco defensive midfielder Youssouf Fofana could be one of them, although he is also on the radar of another English club. According to Athletic, Nottingham Forest are the most advanced team in their search for the 24-year-old’s signature and have already made a verbal offer.
The offer is said to be around $38m (£28.5m/€33m) and the Ligue 1 outfit are said to be willing to let him go at that price. As a France international and compatriot of Ibrahima Konaté, a deal in this region represents excellent value for a Liverpool side who abandoned Caicedo after not putting up much resistance to Real’s successful pursuit of Jude Bellingham. Madrid.
But for a much lower price, the Reds could sign a strong international to provide much-needed depth in the defensive midfield, while also having the chance to develop further if he joins a team led by Alexis Mac Allister. At 24, he is also within the age that the FSG is aiming for for players who retain their resale value. FBref reveals promising numbers in passing progression (7.21 passes per game) and carries (2.57 per game), with his ability to anticipate the game and defensive awareness evident by his interception numbers ranked in the top 17 percentile . Admittedly, he’s not quite on Aurélien Tchouaméni’s level, but with less than two weeks left to go until the summer transfer window closes, Liverpool have missed an opportunity to make a big statement.
In a squad already strengthened by the additions of Dominik Szoboszlai, Mac Allister and most recently Endo, it doesn’t take a new signing to come in and change the way Liverpool play. They just need to be reliable in the role assigned to them, providing stability to an attacking front led by Mohamed Salah who is arguably the best in the Premier League.
Fofana’s natural athleticism in possession allows him to outrun oncoming defenders, offering a degree of resistance to pressure, while his penchant for forward passing fits the same mold as Endo, where the focus is take the ball into the most creative offensive players.
Perhaps the most tantalizing prospect of a deal for Fofana would be its price. A $38m (£28.5m/€33m) deal poses little risk, in a situation where FSG would have spent only a fraction of the transfer budget, leaving Klopp with a safety net that could be used in January when additional reinforcements are needed.

Carlos Baleba is a target for Liverpool, according to rumors.
If you can’t get Moises Caicedo then maybe get the man Brighton want to sign to replace Moises Caicedo.
Having just sold Moises Caicedo to Chelsea in a £115m deal that still has Liverpool fans gritting their teeth, Brighton have chosen 19-year-old Lille’s Carlos Baleba as the man to replace their late defensive midfielder .
For some Liverpool fans, this begs a seemingly simple question: if Liverpool can’t have Caicedo, why don’t they just go and sign Baleba, aka Brighton’s supposed replacement for him, instead. Now, it seems the rumor mills agree.
At least according to The Mail and a smattering of even less popular outlets today, that’s precisely what Liverpool are at least considering, although it’s worth pointing out upfront that Baleba is a 19-year-old with 22 total senior caps. If fans rightly thought Southampton’s Roméo Lavia was unwilling to be a week-to-week regular for a club with silver lining ambitions, well, Baleba is far behind Lavia in his growth.
However, if Liverpool were to sign a more experienced player for the starting role, there could be a case for spending £15m to sign the young up-and-comer, although this would only make sense if Stefan Bajcetic is seen as more than an eight.
Baleba is not ready for a starting role at Liverpool at the moment. It’s far from certain that he’s ready for that in Brighton as well. However, it’s easy to imagine a world in which he will be a regular starter for a top English club in two or three years’ time.
