Liverpool suffer setback in pursuit of Marc Guehi ahead of planned January move

Liverpool appear set to dive back into the transfer market this January, with strong expectations that they will renew their pursuit of Marc Guehi, the Crystal Palace standout centre-back.

Sources around Anfield say Liverpool will “have to dig deep” if they want to land Guehi, with the defender attracting serious attention from European giants Real Madrid and Barcelona, both prepared to push for him as a free agent in the summer.

Manager Arne Slot is pushing hard for defensive reinforcements after what has been a dismal start to their Premier League campaign. The Reds’ shaky back line has already shipped 20 goals in 12 matches, prompting the club to revisit their summer interest in the Palace captain. But any January deal would still require a significant fee—despite the fact that Guehi has just six months left on his deal.

Guehi, 25, has already informed Palace he will not sign a new contract. Still, the centre-back continues to earn huge respect from supporters for his professionalism throughout the uncertainty.

Liverpool previously saw a £35 million deadline-day bid rejected in the summer, but the player remains high on their list as Slot looks to stabilise the defence.

The challenge, however, has intensified. From January 1, clubs outside England—such as Real Madrid, Barcelona, Bayern Munich, and Inter Milan—can open talks and even secure him on a pre-contract before the season ends. As a bonus for Spanish clubs, Guehi’s Ivorian passport allows him to register as an EU player, increasing his appeal.

Crystal Palace now face a difficult decision: cash in for a reduced fee in January or risk losing their captain for nothing in the summer, weighing his transfer value against his on-field importance.
