Liverpool transfer news: Jurgen Klopp “wants another midfielder” and has a target in sight
Share
Wataru Endo, Dominik Szoboszlai, Ryan Gravenberch, and Alexis Mac Allister were all signed by Liverpool in the summer, but might another midfield player be joining in January?
Under Jurgen Klopp, Liverpool is having a memorable season and is still in the running for four major championships.
If the Reds defeat Arsenal at Anfield on Saturday, they will be the league leaders on Christmas Day. They also easily advanced to the Carabao Cup semifinals and the round of 16 in the Europa League after defeating West Ham 5-1 at home on Wednesday.
Although Liverpool must travel to Arsenal in the third round of the FA Cup, they still have a chance to win. Even if Klopp’s club is currently performing well, he could need to make some transfers in January to bolster his roster. In light of that, the following are the most recent headlines from Merseyside’s red area.
Liverpool Barella hunt
Nicolo Barella, an Inter Milan midfielder, is wanted by three teams, including Liverpool, according to Fichajes. The 26-year-old, whose current contract expires in June 2026, is having difficulty getting Inter to agree to a new deal in order to stifle Premier League interest.
Barella is rumoured to be pursuing Chelsea and Newcastle in addition to helping Italy win the 2021 European Championship. Along with helping the Italian powerhouses reach the Champions League final last season, he has also won five titles with Inter, including the Serie A championship three seasons ago.
Barella is estimated to be worth £65 million. He was nominated twice for the Ballon d’Or and won the Serie A Best Midfielder title the previous season. He has played for Como and Cagliari in the past. In July 2019, Inter signed him, originally on loan, from the latter club.
Andre ready for move
ESPN reports that Brazilian midfielder Andre is prepared for a move to Europe. Having earned four caps for his nation, the 22-year-old declined a summer transfer to Liverpool in order to support Fluminense in their Copa Libertadores victory and trip to the Club World Cup final. In the latter tournament’s final, Fluminense plays Manchester City on Friday.
With the addition of Alexis Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai, Ryan Gravenberch, and Wataru Endo throughout the summer, rumours have it that Liverpool’s interest in Andre has waned. Barella is one of the midfield players that Liverpool is most unlikely to sign in January.
The “favourite player” of Klopp.
Prior to Liverpool’s crushing victory on Wednesday, Klopp declared that Jarrod Bowen of West Ham is “probably my favourite player besides all my players”. In the quarterfinal, the only goal Klopp’s defenders gave up was Bowen’s exquisite curling attempt.
The 27-year-old Bowen had previously been predicted to replace Mohamed Salah. Al-Ittihad’s interest in the 31-year-old makes his future at Liverpool uncertain; they may make another offer in January. A £150 million bid was turned down by the Saudi club in the summer.
That offer came at the end of the window, and Liverpool turned it down, but if the timing is right, they might accept. Although talk surrounding Bowen will only grow as a result of Klopp’s remarks, a deal in January would require extraordinary circumstances.

Gary Neville issues a caution to Liverpool ahead of their game with Arsenal for the Premier League title.
Arsenal has taken the lead in the Premier League title race after defeating Brighton 2-0 at the Emirates Stadium, and Liverpool has now dropped points.
Prior to Liverpool’s Premier League title match versus Arsenal at Anfield on Saturday, Gary Neville has issued a warning. After Sunday night’s 0-0 tie with Manchester United, the Reds fell to second place in the standings.
Having defeated Brighton 2-0 earlier this afternoon, Arsenal has now taken back the top spot in the Premier League. The Gunners completely outplayed the Seagulls, winning all three points thanks to goals from Kai Havertz and Gabriel Jesus.
Mikel Arteta expressed his elation with his team’s performance in a post-match interview, saying they dominated the game and took advantage of opportunities when it mattered. “Superb,” the Spanish person exclaimed.
“We gave an amazing performance, and I believe we deserved to win the game. I must give them credit as I am aware of how difficult it is and the damage Brighton does to teams. We prevented that from occurring, and I’m overjoyed.”
Arsenal’s journey to Merseyside next weekend will be a crucial test of their title credentials as they attempt to snap a 13-game losing streak at Anfield. As they attempt to maintain their top spot in the table come Christmas, the Gunners will enter the game just one point ahead of Liverpool.
But Neville thinks that if Jurgen Klopp’s team plays like they did against United, which was hardly a winning performance, they would be in trouble. “Every game is different, but if Liverpool were playing like this against Arsenal next weekend, they’d be down two or three goals right now,” Neville stated while providing commentary at Anfield.
