Morten Frendrup

Liverpool did not secure a midfielder over the summer after missing out on Real Sociedad’s Martin Zubimendi, but they may reconsider their options in January.

Genoa midfielder Morten Frendrup has downplayed transfer speculation linking him to Liverpool over the summer. The 23-year-old was also mentioned in connection with the Reds last January, though the links were less prominent then.

Since that time, Liverpool has seen changes in both coaching staff and boardroom personnel, yet rumors involving the Dane resurfaced over the summer. Frendrup, who can play as both a central midfielder and a defensive pivot, appeared 39 times for Genoa last season, scoring two goals and providing six assists.

Arne Slot was looking for a defensive midfielder in his first transfer window and targeted Martin Zubimendi from Real Sociedad. However, the 25-year-old chose to remain at his hometown club, rejecting the interest.

Doubts persisted regarding the club’s interest in Frendrup, and the player confirmed that no formal inquiry was made. In an interview with Tipsbladet before a potential debut for Denmark, Frendrup, who admired Steven Gerrard as a child, commented on the Liverpool links: “It’s obviously a huge club, but it’s a long way from concrete interest. For me, it’s about doing as well as possible. So, everything else is up to my agent.”

Liverpool eventually did not sign a midfielder after their unsuccessful pursuit of Zubimendi. There might be an opportunity for a January move, considering the Reds spent only £42.5 million on two players over the summer, although Zubimendi will still have two-and-a-half years remaining on his contract.

New Liverpool sporting director Richard Hughes described the club’s approach to the summer market as “opportunistic.” The Reds acquired Juventus winger Federico Chiesa for £12.5 million and have arranged for goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili to join from Valencia next year for £29 million.

Vitor Reis

Liverpool, Arsenal, Barcelona, and Real Madrid are among the clubs keenly observing Palmeiras prodigy Vitor Reis as a potential future transfer target.

According to sources familiar with the player’s situation, there is increasing interest in the promising 18-year-old defender following his impressive performances in Brazil. A significant move to Europe seems likely in the near future.

The exact destination for Reis is still uncertain, but scouts from Liverpool, Arsenal, Real Madrid, Barcelona, and Benfica have been attending recent matches to assess his development. The young centre-back is widely recognized as having a bright future ahead.

Reis has received favorable reviews since his time in Palmeiras’ youth team, which has also produced top talents like Endrick and Estevao Willian recently.

Reis Transfer: Brazil’s Next Big Thing to the Premier League?

Reis could potentially fit well with the Premier League’s top teams, though it’s unclear whether he might be drawn to them or follow the trend of Brazilian stars joining Real Madrid.

Real Madrid has successfully developed players such as Vinicius Junior, Rodrygo Goes, and now Endrick, and has shown a commitment to nurturing young talents like Jude Bellingham and Eduardo Camavinga.

However, Arsenal has similarly developed talents like Bukayo Saka, Gabriel Martinelli, and William Saliba, making the Emirates Stadium a plausible next destination for Reis.

Liverpool also appears to be an appealing option at present, especially with Virgil van Dijk aging. Reis could potentially take on a significant role as Van Dijk’s future successor in Liverpool’s defense.
