Liverpool transfer round-up: Jurgen Klopp’s daring £77 million offer following two Saudi departures
Share
Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool have already signed two internationals this summer – but before the window closes there could be a few more superstars heading to Merseyside
Liverpool will remain active in the transfer market despite the signings of Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai.
The Reds said goodbye to first-team favorites Roberto Firmino, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Naby Keita and James Milner at the end of June and need to find long-term replacements. Another midfielder could be signed before the start of the new season.
Jurgen Klopp is keen to avoid a repeat of last season when Liverpool finished fifth in the Premier League and missed out on Champions League football. They also failed to go the distance in cup competitions except for the Community Shield.
According to The Guardian, Liverpool are interested in signing Real Madrid midfielder Federico Valverde. Klopp is reportedly making a £77m offer for the 24-year-old Uruguayan international, who has become a key member of Carlo Ancelotti’s squad in recent years.
Liverpool’s interest in Valverde is alleged to have arisen since Jude Bellingham joined Real rather than Liverpool. The 20-year-old midfielder recently moved from Bundesliga number two Borussia Dortmund to the Spanish capital.
It seems unlikely that Valverde will leave Madrid for Liverpool, although a midfielder could leave. The 14-time European champions now have seven midfielders in Bellingham, Valverde, Luka Modric, Toni Kroos, Eduardo Camavinga, Dani Ceballos and Aurélien Tchouameni.
Premier League clubs are aware of this and a loan deal for one of these midfielders – possibly Tchouameni – could be an option. Real won’t want to sell their young stars as Modric and Kroos near the end of their respective careers.
Thiago at the latest
As stated in our previous transfer preview, clubs in Saudi Arabia are interested in signing Thiago Alcantara.
The 32-year-old midfielder, who has a year left on his contract, is believed to want to stay at Anfield and has already turned down a lucrative offer. Nevertheless, the Telegraph are now reporting that Liverpool are ready to sell Thiago this summer.
The Reds are unlikely to demand a hefty transfer fee from the Spaniard after he arrived from Bayern Munich for a bargain price of £20million three years ago, but he won’t be leaving on a free transfer.
Liverpool wouldn’t mind removing Thiago from the wage bill. He is believed to earn around £200,000 a week which is significantly more than new signing Szoboszlai. The Hungary international is said to have accepted a salary of £125,000 a week. Firmino’s new club
Firmino has signed a three-year deal with Saudi Pro League side Al-Ahli. The Brazil international, 31, left Liverpool after eight years of service when his contract expired last month. He won seven trophies at Anfield and scored 11 goals in 362 games.
Liverpool posted a stylish tribute to Firmino on their website after the news broke. They wrote: “Everyone at LFC thanks Roberto for his input and wishes him all the best for the future.”

Liverpool were prepared to pay 24-year-old midfielder a huge salary, but he didn’t want to join them
Liverpool were happy to match Manchester United’s offer of £200,000 a week to get Mason Mount to join them.
Mount completed the move to United today, having come under fire for Liverpool earlier in the period. While The Athletic confirmed the Reds did indeed want the 24-year-old, The Athletic provided some more details on the inner workings of the transfer.
They claim Liverpool “held talks” with Mount and his agents as they tried to persuade him to move to Anfield.
During those talks it was reported that the Reds were making a “margin” offer of £200,000 a week, rising to £250,000 a week with bonuses. It is said to be a virtually identical package to Old Trafford.
Interestingly, it would also be a salary similar to what was on the table at his former club Chelsea.
Ultimately, however, Mount opted to sign for United. The club’s participation in the Champions League next season is touted as a ‘factor’ in their decision.
Liverpool miss Mount
So it’s finally official: Liverpool will not sign Mason Mount. Not now – and judging by the transfer history of Liverpool and United – never either.
For many fans, that won’t be a problem at all.
When it looked like the Reds would sign the England international, many fans were divided. Now that he has faced the old enemy, tears are unlikely to be shed.
Still, it’s always a shame to hear a player snubbing Liverpool for United. It certainly softens the blow that the Reds have just paid RB Leipzig £60million to sign Dominik Szoboszlai.
But given the same transfer fee Mount left Chelsea for, one would have thought Liverpool would have gone for him as well.
As such, the only reason Mount isn’t a Reds player now appears to be because he preferred to join United. And therefore, all we can say is ‘Good release’.
As Jurgen Klopp hinted when Cody Gakpo joined him in January, he wants players who ‘drive the train, don’t jump on it. “. If he’s playing Champions League football, he wants a decisive player, so we’re not interested
For comparison, here’s what Szoboszlai said when asked about playing in Europe’s top competition next season:
“I can accept that I won’t be able to play the Champions League for a year and the goal is to win the Europa League,” he told the Liverpool Echo.
“Liverpool compete in four competitions and I want to help them win as many as possible. When I heard there was a lot of interest, I didn’t think of the Champions League. It’s more about winning the Europa League with Liverpool.”

To finally sign a £42 million star, Liverpool is prepared to increase its offer, according to a report.
Liverpool needs to bolster its defense in the upcoming summer transfer window, and Perr Schuurs of the Netherlands is their top target once more.
When he played for Ajax in 2020 (The Mirror), The Reds were linked with him, and they haven’t lost that interest.
After putting on a strong season last year, Torino paid a fee of roughly 10 million euros to hire his services, and now major European clubs are keeping an eye on him.
Liverpool and Napoli reportedly made offers to woo Schuurs, but the Granata rejected them, according to a report covered by Tutto Sport earlier in the day.
The Italian champions submitted a bid worth 28 million euros, while the Reds offered 30 million euros.
The Turin-based media outlet reported that Liverpool are prepared to make a better and newer offer to finally sign the 23-year-old.
Schuurs is worth approximately £42.8 million (50 million euros), but the president of Il Toro might accept a deal if he receives a bid of roughly 40 million euros.
According to Tutto Sport, it is not impossible for the Anfield club to meet the asking price.
Only Napoli, Lazio, Roma, and Juventus had a better defensive record in the previous Serie A season than Torino. Perr Schuurs played in 30 league games and contributed to the team’s nine shutouts.
Should Liverpool raise their offer to finally sign him, in your opinion?
