Liverpool vs Tottenham: Van Dijk’s most recent injury, expected starting lineup, and verified team news
Share
In his penultimate home game as manager, Klopp must make some important choices.
Virgil van Dijk might not be available for Liverpool’s Sunday visit from Tottenham.
The Dutchman has participated in 33 of Liverpool’s 35 Premier League games so far this season. However, he did not show up for training this week, and his availability will be determined at a later date.
During his pre-match press conference on Friday, Klopp stated, “Virgil wasn’t [training] the whole week yet, probably part of parts of team training today.”
Thus, we must investigate our options there.
At Anfield, Mohamed Salah might make a return to the starting lineup, as Klopp is adamant that any issues between the two have been settled.
Last weekend’s 2-2 draw with West Ham saw the Egyptian benched, and as he was getting ready to enter the game in the second half, he got into a heated argument with Klopp on the touchline.
After the game, Salah declined to stop for an interview with the Liverpool manager, attempting to downplay the incident while stating, “If I speak today there will be fire.”
Due to his ongoing hip ailment, Diogo Jota has not yet resumed training; nonetheless, Conor Bradley is back in the lineup. With Liverpool practically out of the title race, it is hard to predict what Klopp will do with his team in the remaining games of the season.
For the penultimate home game of Klopp’s tenure, Luis Diaz seems to be the only forward for Liverpool who can be reasonably confident of starting, with Darwin Nunez and Salah battling to return to the front three.
In the back, Dominik Szoboszlai may start over Ryan Gravenberch, while Ibrahima Konate may be selected to play with Virgil van Dijk.
Predicted Liverpool XI: Alisson; Alexander-Arnold, Salah, Gakpo, Quansah, Konate, Robertson; Endo, Mac Allister, Szoboszlai, Diaz
Not sure: Van Dijk
Injuries: Thiago, Jota, Matip, Doak
Date and Time: on Sunday May 5, 2024 by 4.30pm BST
Venue: Anfield

Liverpool plans to enter the market in the summer in an effort to bolster their defence.
Even though they were in the running for the Premier League title this year, Jurgen Klopp’s team has had defensive difficulties.

This season, the Reds have only kept nine clean sheets in the league, far less than Arsenal’s sixteen.
The Merseyside club’s Europa League loss to Atalanta at Anfield served as yet another reminder that they require a new defensive face.
The Reds are after Eintracht Frankfurt centre defender Willian Pacho, as verified by journalist Gianluca Di Marzio.
Significant changes are anticipated at Liverpool.

Jurgen Klopp is expected to depart the team, along with a few members of his coaching staff.
Thiago Alcantara is probably going to leave due to his persistent injury issues this season, while Joel Matip’s ACL injury complicates any contract extension.
Meanwhile, Virgil van Dijk, who is already 32 years old, is not getting any younger, and Ibrahima Konate’s frequent injuries are worrisome.
Di Marzio claims that the Merseyside club is very interested in Pacho, a 22-year-old who is excelling in the Bundesliga with Frankfurt.
Liverpool’s team needs a left-sided centre back.
The Ecuadorian international is the only left-footed centre back in the Reds’ defence.
Given these factors, it seems sense and is probably the case that Liverpool’s hiring team is giving defensive reinforcements a serious consideration.
Strengthening the center-back position is crucial if they want to ensure continuity and consistency in their defence for the upcoming season.
