Liverpool were happy to match Manchester United’s offer of £200,000 a week to get Mason Mount to join them.

Mount completed the move to United today, having come under fire for Liverpool earlier in the period. While The Athletic confirmed the Reds did indeed want the 24-year-old, The Athletic provided some more details on the inner workings of the transfer.

They claim Liverpool “held talks” with Mount and his agents as they tried to persuade him to move to Anfield.

During those talks it was reported that the Reds were making a “margin” offer of £200,000 a week, rising to £250,000 a week with bonuses. It is said to be a virtually identical package to Old Trafford.

Interestingly, it would also be a salary similar to what was on the table at his former club Chelsea.
Ultimately, however, Mount opted to sign for United. The club’s participation in the Champions League next season is touted as a ‘factor’ in their decision.

Liverpool miss Mount

So it’s finally official: Liverpool will not sign Mason Mount. Not now – and judging by the transfer history of Liverpool and United – never either.
For many fans, that won’t be a problem at all.

When it looked like the Reds would sign the England international, many fans were divided. Now that he has faced the old enemy, tears are unlikely to be shed.

Still, it’s always a shame to hear a player snubbing Liverpool for United. It certainly softens the blow that the Reds have just paid RB Leipzig £60million to sign Dominik Szoboszlai.

But given the same transfer fee Mount left Chelsea for, one would have thought Liverpool would have gone for him as well.

As such, the only reason Mount isn’t a Reds player now appears to be because he preferred to join United. And therefore, all we can say is ‘Good release’.

As Jurgen Klopp hinted when Cody Gakpo joined him in January, he wants players who ‘drive the train, don’t jump on it. “. If he’s playing Champions League football, he wants a decisive player, so we’re not interested

For comparison, here’s what Szoboszlai said when asked about playing in Europe’s top competition next season:

“I can accept that I won’t be able to play the Champions League for a year and the goal is to win the Europa League,” he told the Liverpool Echo.

“Liverpool compete in four competitions and I want to help them win as many as possible. When I heard there was a lot of interest, I didn’t think of the Champions League. It’s more about winning the Europa League with Liverpool.”

Liverpool needs to bolster its defense in the upcoming summer transfer window, and Perr Schuurs of the Netherlands is their top target once more.

When he played for Ajax in 2020 (The Mirror), The Reds were linked with him, and they haven’t lost that interest.

After putting on a strong season last year, Torino paid a fee of roughly 10 million euros to hire his services, and now major European clubs are keeping an eye on him.

Liverpool and Napoli reportedly made offers to woo Schuurs, but the Granata rejected them, according to a report covered by Tutto Sport earlier in the day.

The Italian champions submitted a bid worth 28 million euros, while the Reds offered 30 million euros.

The Turin-based media outlet reported that Liverpool are prepared to make a better and newer offer to finally sign the 23-year-old.

Schuurs is worth approximately £42.8 million (50 million euros), but the president of Il Toro might accept a deal if he receives a bid of roughly 40 million euros.

According to Tutto Sport, it is not impossible for the Anfield club to meet the asking price.

Only Napoli, Lazio, Roma, and Juventus had a better defensive record in the previous Serie A season than Torino. Perr Schuurs played in 30 league games and contributed to the team’s nine shutouts.

Should Liverpool raise their offer to finally sign him, in your opinion?
