Liverpool's move pays off after Premier League opponent backs out of £70 million contract. When Newcastle United withdrew from talks

When Newcastle United withdrew from talks with Crystal Palace for defender Marc Guehi before to the transfer window closing, Liverpool’s future plans gained momentum.

Liverpool made the right choice by passing on Marc Guehi this summer, as Newcastle withdrew their interest in signing the Crystal Palace defender.

For the England international, the Magpies have faced rejections from several bids, including a club-record £65 million offer with a further £5 million in add-ons. As the transfer window is about to close, Newcastle has made the decision to cease talks with Eagles chairman Steve Parish because he won’t budge on Palace’s demands.

With fewer than two years left on his contract, Guehi’s south London team was looking for a package of £75 million to entice the captain away from Selhurst Park, but Palace has shown itself unwilling to trade. Due to Newcastle’s decision to withdraw from negotiations this month, other teams will now have competition going forward.

In the event that Guehi stays at Crystal Palace this summer, the Reds intended to give him serious consideration. With Arne Slot’s options including Jarell Quansah, Ibrahima Konate, Joe Gomez, and Virgil van Dijk, the Chelsea youth product was judged too costly to sell right away.

Oliver Glasner, the Palace manager, reaffirmed on Friday, saying, “Yes, I can confirm that.” However, it was never truly in question. First of all, congratulations to everyone at Crystal Palace, the chairman, and for standing your ground. It was crucial that Marc stays, particularly following Joachim Andersen’s transfer.

“Thank you also to Marc.” We talked a lot and were close all the time. His demeanour, his performance, or his personality were unaffected by the rumours at all. The players’ statements to me that they enjoy playing for Crystal Palace is what matters most, and he has always assured me that he is not pushing to quit the team.

“Marc told me repeatedly, behaved in the same manner, and once again displayed his amazing character. That’s the way things stand if both the player and the club don’t cave. Marc Guehi continues to play for Crystal Palace.

Liverpool is now back in the race as a result. Virgil van Dijk permitting, the Reds may try to make a move in a year.

Along with Trent Alexander-Arnold, Mo Salah, the Dutchman is in the last year of his contract at Anfield. It is not yet known if he is willing to stay longer. Slot seems unfazed by the circumstances.

“If we bring the best out of them and they perform really well then it’s up to them if they want to sign and us if we give them a new contract,” he stated. “The main thing for all of them, if you’re out of contract or not, is to get the best performance as possible and there is where I should and will help them with my staff, to bring out the best of them.”

Should the Reds make a bid to sign Guehi, they will be hoping to get more for their money from Crystal Palace. They could have preferred to see the defender’s worth drop as his contract expires since they were unwilling to spend as much money this summer.
