Mohamed Salah defeats Kenny Dalglish, setting a Premier League era record for Liverpool thanks to Darwin Nunez.
Darwin Nunez and Mohamed Salah of Liverpool made some history on Sunday as the Reds and Brighton drew 2-2 in the Premier League.
Mohamed Salah, a forward for Liverpool, had gone seven Premier League away games without scoring coming into the trip to Brighton on Sunday.
Salah still made a significant contribution during that time, contributing an incredible eight assists, but it was still an unusual scoring slump for a player who has arguably been the league’s most reliable scorer since his arrival in 2017.
The Egyptian had a good record against Brighton, having scored six goals against the Seagulls.
Only Kenny Dalglish, arguably the greatest Liverpool legend of all time, had scored more goals against Brighton in this specific matchup.
And sure enough, Salah would score twice — once through open play and once from the penalty spot — to overtake Liverpool’s other “king” at the top of the standings.
However, his main emotion will likely be disappointment that his team was unable to hold on for three points after he inspired the comeback late in the first half.
Around the halfway line, Alexis Mac Allister made a catch and passed it to Dominik Szoboszlai to put the Reds on the attack.
This started the move that resulted in Salah’s first goal.
When Darwin Nunez was fed by Luis Diáz, the Hungarian eagerly anticipated Néz’s delivery of the ball across the box.
Harvey Elliott initially appeared to be on the way, but when Salah shouted over his right shoulder, he unavoidably left it for the team’s most productive player, who strode onto it and put the ball in the back of the net.
In total, Nunez has now helped Salah score seven goals for Liverpool across all competitions, which is an incredible number of assists.
Even though it may not have been entirely intentional, the Reds’ current run is the longest in the Premier League era, according to Opta’s Michael Reid.
It is clear that since Nunez joined from Benfica in a club-record move in 2022, the two have developed a strong bond.
The fact that Salah has only reciprocated twice in the same time period makes it seem somewhat one-sided on paper, but that is simply a reflection of his subpar finishing.
On Thursday night, when Liverpool played Union SG in the Europa League, there was a prime example. Salah laid the ball off to Nunez with a square ball from the right, but the number nine strangely skew the ball wide as the crowd waited for the net to swell.
This partnership won’t be acknowledged for what it is—one of the most notable in the Premier League—until the 24-year-old begins taking advantage of his opportunities more frequently.
Salah has quickly gotten back on track after his streak of 12 straight games with a goal assist ended against the Spurs, and he currently continues to set the standard for the other Liverpool attackers.
The remainder of the forwards must work to meet his standard, but Nunez bears the greatest responsibility given his position and price.

The 26-year-old has reportedly given Liverpool new life this season, “Like a new signing,” according to pundits.
This season, Liverpool is off to a fantastic start in the Premier League.
The Reds haven’t lost in their first five games of the season, and while their performances haven’t always been spectacular, they have displayed a real cutting edge in attack.
In fact, the Merseyside club has been scoring goals like crazy lately, and Luis Diaz has made a significant contribution to the Liverpool attack.
Clinton Morrison, speaking on Premier League Productions, claimed that after missing significant amounts of last season due to injury, Diaz has returned with a mission to prove.
The winger, according to Morrison, appears to be a new addition at Anfield this season.
Like a fresh signing
Morrison had nothing but positive things to say about Diaz.
“Diaz came off the bench and changed the game, that much I am certain of in that contest.
He, Nunez, and Diaz in particular.
With the injury he suffered last season, Diaz has been like a new signing for Liverpool.
He is an outstanding player and a top-tier player, according to Morrison.
Been outstanding.
Morrison is absolutely correct; this season, Diaz has been like a new signing for Liverpool, and his rise to prominence has undoubtedly given this team new life.
Simply put, the winger is a fantastic player.
On that left wing, he can conjure something from nothing, and when he’s in top form, he’s impossible to contain.
The Colombian’s main goal this term is to stay healthy, but if he succeeds, he may end up as one of the Premier League’s players of the season.
This Liverpool team has undoubtedly received a new lease on life thanks to Diaz
