Premier League confirms referee for Man Utd match, which infuriates Liverpool supporters.

In an attempt to hold onto first place and win the Premier League for the first time since 2020, Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool can’t afford to lose too many games between now and May.
The Premier League’s choice of Anthony Taylor as the referee for Liverpool’s next match against Manchester United has angered the fans of the latter team.
On paper, the matchup with Old Trafford is one of Liverpool’s more difficult remaining fixtures. They were defeated by United in the FA Cup quarterfinals this season, as well as in the same match from the previous season.
This season, 45-year-old Taylor has already assumed the helm of multiple Reds games. In addition to giving Jurgen Klopp’s team two penalties in their 4-2 victory against Newcastle, he also dismissed defender Ibrahima Konate during the match against Arsenal.
This season, 45-year-old Taylor has already assumed the helm of multiple Reds games. In addition to giving Jurgen Klopp’s team two penalties in their 4-2 victory against Newcastle, he also dismissed defender Ibrahima Konate during the match against Arsenal.
The last time he officiated a Liverpool vs. Manchester United game was in 2021, when he masterminded the Reds’ historic 5-0 victory at Old Trafford and sent United player Paul Pogba off. Nevertheless, many Liverpool supporters have expressed their worries.
“I’m sure that Greater Manchester’s Anthony Taylor will be fair & impartial when Liverpool play Manchester United at Old Trafford in Manchester,” commented another. One person asked, “Why do Manchester clubs get Manchester referees?”
Despite being from Greater Manchester, Taylor supports Altrincham, a non-league team. The Athletic was informed by club president Grahame Rowley that Anthony had always been an Altrincham fan.
Even now, even though he is unable to attend every game, he still receives a season ticket each year. I’m often getting asked if I’m a Red or a Blue by people here. In actuality, he’s a fantastic supporter of non-League football and deserves recognition rather than criticism.
In his final Premier League match as an official, Taylor officiated Sunday’s goalless draw between Manchester City and Arsenal. The Premier League declined to assign him a midweek match, instead assigning him fourth official duties for Newcastle United’s home match against Everton.
Liverpool is also playing in midweek; Stuart Attwell will be in charge of their match on Thursday against Sheffield United at home. Later that evening, Manchester United takes on Chelsea, with Jarred Gillett calling the whistle.
The Old Trafford match on Sunday takes place one day after Liverpool’s title rivals play. Paul Tierney will referee Manchester City’s match against Crystal Palace on Saturday lunchtime, while John Brooks, who oversaw Manchester United vs. Liverpool on Saturday evening, will be in charge of Arsenal’s match against Brighton on Saturday evening.
