Although Liverpool hasn’t shown their interest in him by putting up a formal offer, Hacken reportedly values him at £7 million, so a January transfer would not break the bank. However, because of his 10 goals and five assists in all competitions this season, Barcelona and RB Leipzig are also considering the 18-year-old.

Sonko played 82 minutes in the match that Liverpool saw, and the Merseyside club was interested enough to plan to scout him during a training session earlier in the year for the Swedish club.

He could give Liverpool a viable option as their star player, Mohamed Salah, will be away with Egypt for most of January playing in the Africa Cup of Nations. He was recently called up to the Swedish national squad.

Salah’s long-term future at Anfield is still up in the air because Saudi Arabia is still interested. As the teenager is more likely to be seen as a player for the future than as someone who can have an immediate effect, Sonko may be one method Liverpool is protecting their future.

The Reds could be able to spend more money elsewhere if they see Sonko as the forward they need to recruit. After all, they saved a lot of money by buying Sonko for £7 million rather than going big for a more well-known player.

Ramsay tests positive for Covid-19
