Striker to be sold by Liverpool as Chelsea considers triggering a £65 million release clause

If Chelsea decides to pursue Dominic Solanke, Liverpool can be in for a summer transfer windfall of £9 million.

The 26-year-old, who originally cost £19 million when he transferred from Liverpool to Bournemouth in 2019, has developed into one of the top English strikers in the game.

Even though Solanke scored 19 goals in the Premier League last season, he was surprisingly left out of Gareth Southgate’s Euro 2024 roster. However, his performance has caught the attention of higher-level teams.

According to reports, his Bournemouth contract has a £65 million release clause that only specific teams can trigger. Liverpool is also guaranteed 20 percent of any money Bournemouth makes on the forward.

If Chelsea proceeds with the marquee acquisition this summer, Liverpool would owe roughly £9 million based on a £46 million profit on a £65 million deal.

The Blues are keen to sign a striker this summer, and Jhon Duran of Aston Villa and Samu Omorodion of Atletico Madrid are two top targets.

In 2017, Solanke moved from Chelsea to Liverpool for a rumoured £3 million compensation fee.

The frontman, who shone as a youth academy graduate, played just once for the first team before leaving, failing to make a professional breakthrough at Stamford Bridge.

Solanke’s career at Liverpool didn’t go well either; he only managed one goal in 27 appearances, despite sitting on the sidelines throughout the Reds’ 2018 Champions League final loss to Real Madrid in Kyiv.

But since being signed by Richard Hughes, the current sporting director of Liverpool, he has only become better at Dean Court.

In 46 Championship games, Solanke scored 29 goals to help Bournemouth win promotion back in 2021–2022, and he enjoyed his best-ever top flight season last year.

He signed a new deal with Bournemouth in 2023, and it is now valid until 2027. This puts the Cherries in a strong position to demand that any interested clubs fulfil the entire release clause.

It’s thought that the clause can only be activated by elite English clubs and Champions League teams.

His contract will expire in June 2025, and conversations over his renewal have stalled. As a result, the Saudi Pro League continues to view him as a top priority.

In midfield, Liverpool is pursuing Feyenoord’s Quinten Timber, a player Slot also values; however, there is fierce competition for his services, with several Italian and German clubs interested.

The Anfield club has requested information on the potential costs of the operation for Monaco’s Youssouf Fofana, but Newcastle, AC Milan, and Manchester United are also in the running, so Liverpool are unlikely to have it all their own.
